Best games for Switch for 9 year old boy

I know this is highly subjective, but DS has been told for the third year in a row that there is no way he is getting a Switch. The only problem is, to keep him believing this, we cannot ask what games he wants! I know he is desperate for Pokemon Sword, but we have two other relatives offering to buy games. What should we buy?

TIA

My girls (7 & 9) love Minecraft. It's really creative and they can play it together too.

Thewishingchair123 · 29/09/2021 22:06

My 8 yr old DS really enjoys Mario Kart - also enjoyable for the rest of the family! He loves Minecraft too, it took him a while to get into it but he talks about it all the time now!

mnahmnah · 29/09/2021 22:08

Mario Party for sure. And some extra joy cons

Impatientwino · 29/09/2021 22:12

Another vote for Mario Party - it's brilliant - lots and lots of different mini games and challenges.

It doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out too much when he asks me to play with him too Grin

iklboo · 29/09/2021 22:17

How old is he? Great games:

Anything Mario
Luigi's Mansion
Zelda games
1-2-Switch
51 Worldwide Games

JS87 · 29/09/2021 22:19

If he is in to marvel then Marvel ultimate alliance 3.

Lipsandlashes · 29/09/2021 22:22

My two girls love Minecraft, Zelda Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart. They also love Animal Crossing, which might seem a bit ‘girly’ but is actually really popular with the boys in their classes too.

Topbird29 · 29/09/2021 22:23

We got a switch in June for our two to use (7 & 9). We got minecraft (as all the kids seem to be familiar with this), ninjago, marvel superheros 2 and Mario 3d world/bowser game. The most used is minecraft, and they can both play at same time as we got a switch (not a lite that can't be used on tv). Also got extra controllers (compatible ones).

Topbird29 · 29/09/2021 22:25

Jurassic world- lego- also meant to be good. We also have lego harry potter on the wii and think can also get for switch. Is a good game, but has spoilers if not read books or seen films

fijitheturtle · 29/09/2021 22:31

There's a new Pokémon game out just before Christmas which is likely to be the new sword. Pokémon diamond / Pearl. It's a remake of an old Pokémon game but will probably be on most list this year. Otherwise mario party superstars, miitopia is fun, wario ware has just come out as well. We love the switch in our house!

Fluffmonkey82 · 29/09/2021 22:37

My 8 year plays the 51 games one and he loves Pokemon. He also has Mario Odyssey and Animal Crossing. Think am going to get him Luigi's Mansion for Christmas looks so good!

germainegrainne · 29/09/2021 22:47

Animal Crossing
Minecraft
Rocket League - which i think is a free download

Surpriseat42 · 29/09/2021 22:49

Ds is 10 and his favourite is Zelda breathe of the wild

severusvape · 29/09/2021 23:01

My son, not long turned 10, loves minecraft, splatoon, mario kart and luigi’s mansion. The first two are all time favourites that he plays a lot, the rest, just now and again.
He’s mentioned Pokémon to me recently but he said ‘shield’ is better than ‘sword’, I have no idea if that’s true as haven’t seen either game played, just what his friends have told him.

MegBusset · 29/09/2021 23:13

Super Smash Bros is the absolute favourite here.

They also love Mario Kart, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Maker, Fortnite.

They got bored of Animal Crossing pretty quickly. Zelda Breath of the Wild is very hard so not a great starter game imo.

DarkDarkNight · 29/09/2021 23:14

My son loves Mario games and has gone back to Mario Odyssey recently. He’s completed Luigi’s Mansion a few times as well and enjoyed that. Splatoon/Splatoon 2 are fun too.

Gift cards are always a good shout too for online games or the dreaded V-Bucks for Fortnite.

Equimum · 29/09/2021 23:19

Thanks everyone. Will definitely look at the Mario games then, and as he's a huge HP fan, I'll look at that too. He already plays Minecraft on the iPad, so not sure it's worth getting for the Switch as well.

If not already suggested a voucher to choose a game/ games himself.

Or gifts from others to be vouchers?

Lots of kids prefer different types so it's worth considering you could buy some he won't be keen on.

Equimum · 30/09/2021 11:36

I hadn't thought about a voucher brightwhite, so thank-you. He is going to London the day after his birthday, so he'd probably love having a voucher to take.

I've bought Switches for my dds who are 8 and 10 for Christmas. We've settled on giving them a homemade voucher for a couple of games so they can choose and we will download them.

Stompythedinosaur · 30/09/2021 15:16

X post! I see someone got there first with this suggestion!

AndThenInTheEnd · 30/09/2021 15:55

mario odyssey
Splatoon 2
Zelda
Minecraft
Fifa

TheGirlWhoLived · 30/09/2021 15:59

@Equimum if not a physical voucher then I would definitely recommend a Nintendo store voucher. There is always a Boxing Day sale on loads of games that he can browse, buy and download straight onto the switch so could get a bit more for his money than ‘real’ shops!
