Films for Christmas afternoon (don't have to be Christmassy)

Once as the children were beyond the age of playing with toys, we've often watched a film between the Christmas Dinner and the pudding. After that we might play cards or a board game.

We are all adults, but the films have tended to be family films as they are easy to watch/follow so can still chat and drink wine.
Definitely don't have to be Christmassy.
Things like the Incredibles, Lego movie, Cars, Wallace & Grommit.
We try to find one none of us have seen, which is the main challenge. Any suggestions please?

Soul, onward or cruella

Floofsquidge · 29/09/2021 20:47

Die Hard, obviously.

Driftingblue · 29/09/2021 20:50

(Film we have never seen) and (still chat)
Seem incompatible

If you want to keep the conversation going, don’t you want something that people are at least vaguely familiar with, just not bored with?

Non Christmassy option - Christopher Robin 😍 Not usually a fan of Ewan McGregor but we love this movie!

Christmassy option - Miracle on 34th Street 🎅🏼😍 Richard Attenborough version. Best Christmas movie ever 🎄

The Grinch (the Benedict Cumberbatch one) is one of my favourites.
On Netflix there’s The Mitchell’s vs the machines which is an animated kids film but so creative and funny.
I love older films so would have to suggest a silly comedy such as:
Walk, don’t run (a matchmaking Cary Grant)
The Glass bottom boat (Rod Taylor thinking Doris Day is a spy)
The shop around the corner (the original version of You’ve got mail but much better with James Stewart -it is black and white which I know puts some people off).

We ( all adults ) always have a buffet with films on Christmas Eve , the last few years we’ve done Sing , Ruthless people and the Naked gun trilogy .

I just meant a film that didn't need you to concentrate too hard on to understand. It's not like we chat non-stop either. It works for us.

Jungle cruise

Piemam · 29/09/2021 22:59

@mynameisbrian, Delicatessen??? Are you sure? A film you'd watch with your family on a festive day? Or are you waiting to see if anyone noticed?

mynameisbrian · 29/09/2021 23:03

Piemam actually I would remove it from the list but it’s a good film for another season 😅. Although as for a family film
It’s cool if everyone is an adult!
I just found it weird

Godmothered on Disney Plus is great. Also there was one starring Anna Kendrick as Santa’s daughter on there which was also very good!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/09/2021 09:09

An oldie but goodie - Blithe Spirit - suitable for all ages - a ghost comedy classic.

gailplattshairbrush · 30/09/2021 09:10

I always like a good adaptation of A Christmas Carol...there are many to choose from.

TrampolineForMrKite · 30/09/2021 09:10

Magicians. The Mitchell and Webb comedy. Always makes me laugh.

mrsbyers · 02/10/2021 06:03

Nativity , it’s not Christmas without a bit of Mr Poppy

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/10/2021 08:19

Oh yes "Nativity"

And the 2nd one with David Tennant
I cannot remember if we saw the 3rd one

And there's The Flint Street Nativity that's fun .
