The nicest mincemeat?

WildFlowerBees · 28/09/2021 12:07

Please don't say make my own!

Trying to find one that's not too sweet for mince pies. Tried Sainsburys and Waitrose both nice but not 'the one'

Any other suggestions?

I agree with you that commercially made mincemeat is far too sweet, I always improve it!
I buy a decent quality, but plain one, definitely not the luxury types, they are super sweet! Then I grate a cooking apple or two in, if it’s still too sweet, I add lemon juice.

I hardly dare put this here, but honestly this Mary Berry recipe takes a few minutes and I adapt it according to what I have in/like/dislike/reduce the sugar..

Please don’t be cross!!

ImperfectTents · 28/09/2021 12:45

Aldi

ImperfectTents · 28/09/2021 12:47

That Mary berry recipe looks great. I might try it

Caspianberg · 28/09/2021 12:50

Mary berry.
Started using a few years ago as can’t buy easily here. Now I wouldn’t bother buying if I could as it’s quick and tastes far nicer.
I use amaretto, makes them taste like bakewell mince pies

Tangledtresses · 28/09/2021 12:52

I buy Robinsons luxury mincemeat in a jar and add a bit of port to it

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/09/2021 12:58

Oh that Mary berry one looks super easy. Bookmarking! Thank you.

Jumpingintosummer · 28/09/2021 13:00

Sorry but another one who uses the Mary Berry recipe. I’m not a big cinnamon fan though so leave that out and use vintage port or rum.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 28/09/2021 13:02

I use shop bought and add cherries an apple and brandy.

goose1964 · 28/09/2021 13:05

Mrs Beeton's is my favourite as is her Christmas pudding

Coffeeonmytoffee · 28/09/2021 13:08

Rosebud. They sell it in the Borough market it's perfect.

I bought a Lidl one which I add extra brandy to.

@WildFlowerBees I’m glad you took it well!

I don’t like mixed peel or almonds, so put in glacé cherries instead as they’re my favourite. Then I leave out loads of the sugar (even up to a half) and put Port in, as that’s generally what I’d have in at Christmas. Easy! 😁

GorgeousGoldies · 28/09/2021 14:50

Oh, and it keeps for years in a sterilised jar.

Thank you! I'll do the same less sugar more port Wink

It's so easy to make and you can tweak the recipe to add things you like/remove things you dislike. It tastes much "fresher" than shop bought mincemeat IYSWIM, I think it's the citrus juice/zest.I use Delia's recipe.

I also like Delia's. I know we're all saying make your own when you asked us not to, but I swear, it is soooo easy and it's a completely different product to the shop bought stuff.
If we have converted you..... I always use vegetarian suet so you can serve to vegetarian guests. We're not vegetarian, wouldn't say it changes the end result.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/09/2021 16:22

Delia’s for me, too, sorry,

I'm converted, I'm going to give it a go, adding plenty of port appeals.

Plus.... if you are visiting people after you've made it and before Christmas, it's quite a nice little gift. If you've only got bog standard jam jars, cut a big circle out of a Christmas serviette and secure it over the lid with an elastic band/string/ribbon

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 28/09/2021 18:25

Robertson’s / Robinson’s (which is it?) or Tesco own brand. I find it’s more about the pastry than the mincemeat tbh. I make my own pastry but don’t bother making mincemeat as I get through a LOT of it.
