Chromebook for xmas - any advice???

I am thinking about buying DD1 a chromebook for xmas. It is mainly for her to use for her schoolwork and homework as she has a kindle fire for games but I think she would also use it for youtube and maybe playing SIMS. I was worried it was boring as mainly for school but I mentioned it in passing and she was very excited.

I know very little about chromebooks/laptops as work supplies mine so I would be grateful for any advice on:

  1. Is a chromebook a good option at this age? She has just started secondary but used a chromebook at primary and it seeemed to do everything she needed it to.
  2. What do I need to be looking for in a model or anything to definitely avoid?
  3. Any suggestions where to look for good deals.

TIA

Chromebooks have just stopped supporting any Microsoft Office programmes. Up until recently you could download the Android app versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc., but now it's only the web based versions that can be used, so that means no working offline on documents or presentations. I'm not in the UK and my kids are younger than secondary age so I don't know if not having Word etc. would be a problem for your daughter. But I think I'd be looking for a laptop instead.

Thanks @ThisIsJeopardy, I hadn't realised that. It defiitely sounds as though a laptop might be better. It's a shame because the chromebook seemed a smaller and cheaper option.

I’ve bought my dd one for school work and I can really recommend them, she used google docs and then you can convert them to word docs. You can put apps on them which she needs for her homework (all homework is sent via the app) and can do the homework on line she needs too. I knew nothing about them and went to curry’s and was really impressed with the person that served us.
