Harry potter gift ideas wanted

ADreadedSunnyDay · 22/09/2021 18:01

DS (8) is harry potter mad this year and I'm looking to capitalise on this for his presents. Any ideas of cool or unusual Hogwards / Harry Potter themed gifts? I had half thought of buying a small trunk and filling it with gifts but then saw the price of them (and the disclaimer that they weren't very strong).

So we have all the books, DVDs, the snitch toy from Aldi (a bit rubbish), Voldemort's wand and robe, plus HP robes, we've tried bertie botts every flavour beans (truly vile), HP scrabble ... any other ideas?? Oh yes and DS has lots of HP lego (Hagrid's hut is on the list as we haven't got that)

Have you seen the stuff than MinaLima do? Probably best at his age for a card, or the in-universe Hogwarts exercise books, as mostly it's (very expensive) prints, and thing like amazing wallpaper, but they are gorgeous.

Eg this one, a Dumbledore lenticular note and (ie the image "moves"): minalima.com/product/dumbledore-daft-or-dangerous-lenticular-notecard/

Saying about exercise books has reminded me — I wonder if there's an updated version of this?.

We used to make loads of things with it — book covers, placemats, posters as well as calendars and invitations etc.

@ADreadedSunnyDay

Yes was wondering about the studio tour but we are in Scotland so not the easiest ...
What about a trip to Alnwick Castle? Some of the earlier films were filmed there and they often have Harry Potter themes activities on
CaptainMerica · 23/09/2021 22:15

Is the Alidi snitch rubbish then, OP? I bought one, but haven't looked too closely.

No other suggests beyond the great advice you have already had, sorry.

You can get some gorgeous HP calendars! My DD is 9 and she's had one for her room the last couple of years

DoofusRick · 23/09/2021 22:37

Check bargain max website for HP (and fantastic beasts) toys

Cattitudes · 23/09/2021 22:37

A horcrux collection- some things like a black diary you can get from anywhere, others such as Ravenclaw's diadem you can order little replicas on ebay.

What about tickets for the Jacobite steam train from Glasgow to Mallaig? It’s popular with HP fans. It goes over the Glenfinnan viaduct seen in the films.

BreadInCaptivity · 24/09/2021 00:28

At that age my children really liked the board game Scene It - the HP version.

Basically you got to watch a clip of one of the movies and then had to answer questions about it (comes with a DVD but may be all online now as going back a few years).

There were other none "clip" questions but all details about the books/HP world.

It became a bit of a tradition to play it after Christmas Dinner all dressed up in HP clothing, waving wands etc

They are too old for it now theoretically but I actually think I might dig it out this year for reasons of nostalgia!!

It was great fun (apart from from DH who hasn't read the books and always came last but with good grace).

@CaptainMerica
Yes the Snitch is pretty rubbish, it looks cool but has trouble staying aloft and bangs into walls and other objects (a lot). A full charge only equates to about 4-5 mins of actual flying time so it constantly needs charging up. And there is no real warning before the snitches runs out of power - last time this happened it fell on DS head forehead and the wings scratched him. Not badly but still ...

Yes I know about the Jacobite train but frankly don't want to spend so much £££ until we can all go mask free. No pleasure for me sitting for hours in a mask with my glasses steaming up ...

Definitely shop here lots of items you can make/build yourself such as potions and wands.

And if you live near one of the venues definitely consider taking them for the potion experience!

@CleopatrasBeautifulNose

Depending where you live you could consider a day out to York where there is a HP themed crazy golf "The Hole in Wand York Opening In May - The Yorkshireman" the-yorkshireman.com/hole-in-wand-crazy-golf-york/amp/

And you could go to the railway museum where there are various trains very similar to the hogwarts stream train to round your day off

And also the Diagon Alley street!
WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 26/09/2021 21:38

The studio tour is amazing OP. We've gone twice from Scotland - fly to Luton & 20 min cab.

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 26/09/2021 21:49

For the train I'd just watch it pass at glenfinnan. Edinburgh is also great and you can do tours too or walk your own.

Has he got the Hogwarts library set?
