I've been looking for one but can't find one.

OP posts:

It’s for decoration/look and for an absolutely wonderful festive aroma!

We usually do ours on the 23rd. I put them in a bowl to sit on the coffee table and look pretty but you can also tie them with red ribbon and hang them up in the windows.

Ninkanink · 22/09/2021 18:01

Oh and you can’t do it now - I’d do it earliest a few days before. But buy your cloves soon because it’s not unheard of to find none at all in the week before Christmas...

We’ve always studded oranges together ever since the girls were little (grown up now) and it’s a lovely, simple tradition that doesn’t cost much at all and somehow feels very cosy.

psuedocream3 · 22/09/2021 18:15

The cloves in oranges take me back to primary school days, making a Christingle with the candle, ribbon, cloves and dolly mixtures on cocktail sticks to put on the table as decoration with school Christmas dinner. I think I will have to get the children to do this, this year. What a lovely bit of nostalgia.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 22/09/2021 21:39

Thank you @Ninkanink

thelegohooverer · 22/09/2021 22:23

I use a flower nail to stab my oranges. I’m not sure why I own one because I’ve never piped a flower in my life. But it comes in useful this time of year.

Geamhradh · 23/09/2021 08:09

I tend to do mine at the beginning of December, one year one went mouldy but they've always been OK apart from that one time. I keep mine fairly near the heating which I presume dries them out inside and stops the damp that would cause mould. I just podge the cloves themselves into the orange to make the holes.

@VioletBick

Adore this thread. Christmas is my happy time. My late father always made it so magical and I vowed to honour him by doing the same for my family.

Things I want to try this year

  1. Making my own mincemeat. Never attempted it before so any advice/recipes much appreciated.
  1. Drying orange slices and making gingerbread snowflakes to hang on the tree. Both looked lovely last year.
  1. Making popcorn garlands for the tree. DD has requested this and I’m intrigued.
  1. Clove studded oranges. Again never done them but I love the idea of them.
  1. Make a homemade advent calendar (think brown envelopes pegged on string) and fill it will things for us to do as family.

The list goes on! 🎄

Any traditional cooks (Delia, Mary Berry etc) for mincemeat. I do though like Nigella's cranberry studded as well. It's nice and sharp.

Ooh I loved this thread last year.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 23/09/2021 09:34

I am slowly making my way through last years when the toddler will let me! 😂

So far I have:

  • made 3 litres of damson gin. Ageing nicely for ChristMad in a dark cupboard.
  • have ordered material to sew my own Christmas napkins.
  • have ordered some festive yarn to knit everyone a tiny Christmas jumper with their initial on it. Will use instead of gift tags and then they can hang them on their own trees.

I plan to:

  • make the Christmas cake according to the gospel of Delia.
  • make the marmalade gin off last years thread. I think it was @Trumpton who posted it! It looks amazing! 🤩

Can I join you?

Huge Christmas lover and after a pretty horrible year I so need a truly ponce-tastic Christmas! (13yo DS has a muscle-wasting disease and osteoporosis. He fell and broke his leg in April, spent a week including all of Easter in hospital, hasn’t walked since and never will again 😔)

Finished most of the shopping already and have started wrapping with printed brown paper gift wrap, matching luggage label gift tags and bakers twine. I’m planning lots of crafty home-made decorations and today started making Hawthorn Handmade’s mince pie needle felting kit.

I love Narcissi and Daffodils but have never grown paperwhites. Am I too late to order bulbs online, and if not can anyone explain what I need to do please?

Welcome! So sorry to hear about your son Flowers Hopefully poncing with us will help you all to have a lovely Christmas. Trumpton is the paperwhite guru (in my head she's Sarah Raven Grin) but I think (hope) you are in time for ordering. I haven't ordered mine yet.
JustSeven · 23/09/2021 21:13

Thanks Geamhradh

NewPoncingName · 23/09/2021 21:53

I just picked some up at Wilko (mentioned by a pp), 3 nice-looking bulbs for £2

HintofVintagePink · 23/09/2021 22:21

Welcome to all the new poncers! I’m going to try our Wilko tomorrow for bulbs as they do look beautiful.

We’ve also decided to host a ladies Christmas craft session at our community centre. Any ideas for fairly small, simple and inexpensive crafting ideas would be very welcome please! We’re aiming for small and beautiful 😂

Sn0tnose · 23/09/2021 22:51

@HintofVintagePink

You could do marbled baubles. Hobbycraft do packs of three ceramic, non glazed baubles for £3, so split between three crafters, would be cheap. Then a few drops of pretty ink into a bowl of water and dip the bauble in. Looks pretty effective.

Or a small piece of florist foam is cheap. If they went foraging in their gardens/local woodland beforehand, they could make a small display.

Do you know anyone who owns a Cricut who would be able to cut some festive designs to be applied to baubles?

Packs of baubles are £2 in Asda, they could make a small bauble wreath with them and a metal coat hanger.

Since it's a few minutes away from the 24th I've started the Poncetastic Christmas 2021 thread here

OnTheHillNotOverIt · 24/09/2021 07:46

Ah sorry VivaJen. Just noticed you had already done a tidy link! My morning eyes missed it!

StormyCornishSeas · 24/09/2021 20:10

Can I join? never taken part in these threads before. But have stalked for a while.

I have my Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles on order.

Does it matter that whilst I do love crafting I'm not that good at it. Although I do love Christmas and very good at it IMO
