A gift every day in December

I was thinking of something different I could do for DP instead of an advent calendar.

I was thinking of wrapping a small (maybe stocking filler sized) present for every morning in December. Does that sound like a good unique idea? Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?

He loves books, nature, junk food!, science, eco friendly things, fantasy shows like GoT, and gardening.

Would this be a really silly idea?

Sounds incredibly expensive and you can have too much of a good thing.

Row1n · 11/09/2021 17:01

I think its a lovely idea! Does he need new gardening gloves or snippers for dead heading. Does he have a reusable water bottle or straw

TwinsandTrifle · 11/09/2021 17:02

A gift every day in December ....is entirely unnecessary and makes opening other presents feel far less special

Dailywalk · 11/09/2021 17:03

Sounds expensive and hard work tbh. If he has a hobby that you can get inexpensive little bits for it might make it a bit easier. If not I think you’re making life difficult for yourself!

User478 · 11/09/2021 17:04

As long as he knows he's getting 25 bags of crisps instead of a big present on Christmas day, it's a bit of a disappointment otherwise.

Tlollj · 11/09/2021 17:05

Partridge in a pear tree?

OldTinHat · 11/09/2021 17:05

Is that not just an advent calendar without the actual calendar part?? 🤔 Sounds expensive and OTT imo.

Undertheoldlindentree · 11/09/2021 17:06

Unless he's had a really hard time recently and needs a special boost, giving an adult 31 small extra presents (plus actual Christmas gifts as well?) seems a bit extravagant and needy. But we're all different and you know him best.Smile

PersonaNonGarter · 11/09/2021 17:09

I wouldn’t do gifts - it’s sort of grotesque.

You could do ‘treats’ - lift to work, coffee in heated mug, his choice of tv.

But honestly, this is a bit…consumer

UnfinishedBunting · 11/09/2021 17:14

The eco friendly thing would definitely be not to do this.

PaperDolphin · 11/09/2021 17:15

I think it's a really sweet idea, but if he is eco-friendly I think 25 token gifts of stuff might not go down too well? I just think where would I put it all...

Peanutsandchilli · 11/09/2021 17:31

Not sure why an adult needs an advent calendar at all tbh, and less so why their partner would arrange one for them. Seems overkill to buy 24 token gifts and then presents on Christmas Day as well.

captainpillows · 11/09/2021 17:33

I did this for my daughter, and it doesn't need to be expensive!
She loved it!
Yes it's more things to wrap, but so what? If it makes you guys smile, go for it

RAFHercules · 11/09/2021 17:39

You said he loves eco friendly things!
Do the planet a favour and stop yourself.

itsgettingwierd · 11/09/2021 17:43

I've done something fairly similar before.

I got the Xmas gift bags (cellophane cookie ones) and write the date on each. Filled it with a photo, mini chocolate, mini nite book, I I own, magnet with meme etc. 1 thing each day.

I did it for my intents last year who had both been shielding while having chemo through LD1 and I wanted to just do something different. One had odd numbers and the other evens!

They loved it!

Something different doesn't have to be expensive.

Total cost of what I did was under £20. I've seen people spend more on advent calendars.

itsgettingwierd · 11/09/2021 17:44

Hope that makes sense with the million and 1 typos HmmGrin

Stompythedinosaur · 11/09/2021 17:47

But are there really 24 small gifts he would really like and use?

I do something like this for my dc's advent calender, but kids are a bit easier to find things for.

I'm not sure it would stay exciting for an adult all thr way through December, and I'd worry you'd end up either spending a fortune or having some rubbish or repetitive gifts.

PinkFizz1 · 11/09/2021 17:49

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I do see how the eco friendly thing seems a bit ironic. But the expense is not a problem, I was thinking of small things for a pound or two that fall under his interests, or even ‘acts’ like a PP said, something nice for him for the day.

As for a PP asking if he’s had a hard time recently or needs a special boost… don’t we all? Wink

It’s going to be our first ‘adult only’ Christmas this year as his daughter is with her mum for the day so I guess I wanted to do something a bit special for him in case he feels a bit down, that’s all.

I completely get the posters that are saying it’s OTT though.

Maybe just a ‘1st of December’ book or something will suffice!

I think with the amount of thought put into it you personally will be a bit disappointed with his reaction by day 4/5 of opening these gifts and having to feign delight.
I think it will get tired very quick.

PinkFizz1 · 11/09/2021 17:52

Yes I suppose it is really. I was just thinking of more personal items that he’d like rather that 24 days of chocolate 😂

Ah come on now don’t be a Grinch Wink

Given that advent is supposed to be a time of fasting and abstinence before the feast of Christmas... it's not really in the spirit of the season! Grin

Can't you just give him lots of nice things on Christmas day?

HungryHippo11 · 11/09/2021 18:06

How about doing 12 days instead of 31? 12 half decent presents would be more achievable i think - by the time you get to presents 25 to 31 would probably be scraping the barrel 🤣

thecognoscenti · 11/09/2021 18:10

It would just end up being tat which neither he nor the planet would benefit from, with one or two useful items in the mix. Just don't, OP.

user1499489886 · 11/09/2021 18:46

I do this for my OH, as an advent instead of having a stocking with each item numbers randomly. Made up of chocolate, various craft beers, novelty socks, wooly hat etc. I had a few more expensive items from 22nd onwards. He loves it.
