our living room is navy blue and gold but we always have a red and gold tree. i keep going to friend's houses who have these trees which have all have cream and brown decorations or turquoise and white etc. to me christmas is all about red and green and gold and always will be!

nah - christmas is about making your house look bright and colourful and grotto-like.

Those colour co-ordinated decorations look so dull!

Boredveryverybored · 04/12/2007 08:56

My tree this year is decorated in all gold. DD picked the decorations and decided that just gold was what she wanted
It does actually look good in our living room because I have brown sofas and curtains etc.
But I'm not bothered about matching I just let dd decide what she wants. Last year we had everything from silver to purple on the tree! lol

I always have the christmas colours of red, green and gold. All the decorations are the wooden/traditional type things. There will not be a modern christmas in my house!

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 04/12/2007 09:01

Yes, but our house is exceedingly messy and cluttered so it looks like a messy Christmas tree anyway
Agree on there being certain colours you have to have!

If we had a cool minimalist house then well, maybe co-ordinated would be good. But I would find it hard to live like that!

EmsMum · 04/12/2007 09:03

Oh god, tasteful trees....

xmas trees should be bright and jolly and decorated with the same tinsel/baubles year after year from the box stored in the garage or loft.

Getting new decorations each year seems incredibly wasteful to me - money, time and resources. I let DD choose one new bauble each year but she didn't want to bother this time, reckoned we had enough. The ones she's chosen are special and placed with loving care.

iheartdusty · 04/12/2007 10:31

was going to say similar to TwinklyfLightAttendant - our house has no matching colours, is full of piles of stuff that needs sorting plus bits of paper/ glitter/ scraps from craft activities - so the whole effect when garlanded with lights is appalling festive and cheerful, just like a tree.

ComeOVeneer · 04/12/2007 10:33

Yes all matching but I am anal about that kind of stuff

LilyLoo · 04/12/2007 10:34

Started off matching but now take dc's every year to choose some extra decs for it so it's gradually becoming a mish mash but they love it!

StressInAMangerTeddy · 04/12/2007 10:35

Nope, last year I went for all things barbie pink - it looked amazing
I even had a pink feater wreath on the front door. It made people smile as they walked past and I liked that!
You can go wild and crazy ay Christmas as far as I'm concerned

FlossALump · 04/12/2007 10:36

DP brought all green gold and red last year after we lost our decorations with either house move or mouse/rat nesting. I hated it. This year went out and wasted too much money on lilac blue and silver. I'm vaguely aware they may be chavvey colours but frankly they are the ones I like best! Only the baubles and tinsel have to be those colours mind, other decorations are multicolourd. Oh, and white lights, I don't like multicoloured ones in my house!!!

cadeLaideInAManger · 04/12/2007 10:38

matching tree to decor....awful.
Ghastly.
should be crappy paper chains, same old falling-apart decs as the last god-knows-how-many-years, lots of home made junky stuff and even, horrors, tinsel.
There, I've said it.
TINSEL.
Shout it loud and proud.
Our tree is for the kids and they love it.
And that's another thing, one tree for kids and one "tasteful" tree for adults.
What's that about?

EffiePerine · 04/12/2007 10:39

You have a decor?

tarantula · 04/12/2007 10:40

Matching tree? No not at all. Tree is red and silver baubles, and lots of decorations that we have bought over the years. We buy a couple of special ones each year to add on. Last year was some little knitted ones from the local charity shop. this years were from Dunnes tho.

bobsyouruncle · 04/12/2007 10:41

We've always had a red & gold tree, whatever the colours in our living room. But as our living room now has dark red accessories it does currently match, although obviously we didn't plan it that way...

fortunecookie · 04/12/2007 10:45

Snort! Absolutely not. Our tree is always decorated with decorations collected over the years. We even have a few left over from WW2, when my mum & my nana were cowering from the air raids. I do admire the colour coordinated ones but they look better in public places, like shops or hotels, I think.

KittyLetteItSnow · 04/12/2007 10:45

Last year i had a Chocolate brown and blue living room so all my decorations were blue and silver, it looked fab, and we only had blue light too.

But this year my living room is limegreen, grey and black, so the tree is just multicoloured as I didnt have time / couldnt find / didnt have the money to find matching items.

Im not as happy with it this year

I think next time I redecorate Ill do it red, as it looks lovely at christmas!

our tree and deccies are all co-ordinated, blue and silver tree and garlands etc for living room, lilac and silver in entrance hallway etc- i REALLY hate tacky decorations and have palpitations when i see 'santas' everywhere, so our house is serene and calming over christmas with no fat red men in sight at work this year we have pink and blue feathered trees- look fab!!

cadeLaideInAManger · 04/12/2007 10:52

Kitty, are you Anna Ryder Richardson?

i like the idea of co-ordinating , but when we get the boxes of decor out we just choose the ones we like or have memories for us.Have never yet acheived a designery Christmas despite looking at all the magazines and admiring all the schemes. Can't resist the egg box homemade decor dd made at brownies ot the decorated cds she made in year2 at school.

babywhiting · 04/12/2007 11:10

we have 2 trees one in the dining room which is a forest theme all woodland animals and berries etc 8ft tall, then we have one in the lounge covered in warner bros and disney ornaments so we makethe room kid friendly its all bright and with cuddly toys too. house is decorated in creams anyway so will match whatever. yeah yeah its ott!!!!

MerlinsBeard · 04/12/2007 11:13

hell no...first of all i would need a decor to match my tree to but we just use the same dec's eacj year...i think we have purple, blue and silver(not all used at once) as well as the bits the DCs have made. Lucky if the baubles all match really!!

OrmIrian · 04/12/2007 11:23

No. How do you do that? I try to stick to red, green, gold, clear glass, wood etc on the tree which is fine. But then of course there are the 2 springy koalas that mum and dad brought back from NZ just before christmas one yr for the kids that have now become tree decs, the delightful pink sequiny star that DD chose from B&Q one year, not to mention the treasures that various DCs have made in school or nursery over the years, the big plastic FC that has to go on the tree no matter how carefully I try to hide it. Each year the DCs are allowed to choose a new decoration for the tree and sadly their taste doesn't always match mine And since we've moved here we've redecorated many times - couldn't change the tree decorations to match each time.

Our tree is definitely a family endeavour not a style statement.
