our living room is navy blue and gold but we always have a red and gold tree. i keep going to friend's houses who have these trees which have all have cream and brown decorations or turquoise and white etc. to me christmas is all about red and green and gold and always will be!

Do people really buy a new set of decorations every year? I look at the pre-decorated trees in the shops and they are outrageously expensive and sooo tasteful they start to be tasteless iyswim.

What do you do with old ones?

ImBarryScott · 04/12/2007 11:43

tasteful?
Surely Christmas is kitsch per se.

My white-and-wood, open-plan apartment will be decorated with all sorts of sparkly tat.

fireflyxmasfairylights2 · 04/12/2007 11:50

Mine is red & gold.

My livingroom has a brown sofa, Oatmeal curtains & sand coloured walls..

matching... um.. well.. no I guess

Do I care???

Hell no!

Christmas is all about tackiness & the kids putting the tree decs on.

How can people be arsed to go out & buy new decs each year??

bagpuss · 04/12/2007 11:56

Ours is sort of matching I guess. We have a gold, sand and brown living room and the tree is usually in gold and silver with white lights. This year I have bought some extra decorations in red and some baubles in red, gold, pewter and a sort of pinkish colour (they are in a set) and I will decorate the tree with those and some of the existing decorations which match. It doesn't look like the display in John Lewis when I have finished however!

OrmIrian · 04/12/2007 11:58

Ah well that's because John Lewis doesn't have DCs to 'help' or to make later adjustments bagpuss.

Ooh duckegg blue

We have the standard magnolia walls with dark gold curtains and sofas, plus dark red cushions. So yes, our tree does tend to match.

bagpuss · 04/12/2007 12:29

Good point OrmIrian!

i have cream walls, brown sofa with an oatmeal coloured rug and curtains, my tree and decs. are black and silver..

sparklygothkat · 04/12/2007 12:34

my tree is green sorry

EffiePerine · 04/12/2007 12:34

Our decorations are a bit hit and miss (small flat with no room for a tree and climbing DS). DH also makes disapproving noises at anything too sparkly. Am planning use-your-imagination-and-double-sided-sticky-tape decorations this year: choclates (Cad Roses make good baubles), fir cones, holly (from local park if I can get away with it) and lots of glitter and glue

IdrisYouaMerryChristmas · 04/12/2007 12:40

Our tree matches our decor in that both are eclectic in style .

ChippyMincepie · 04/12/2007 12:42

ours is also a mishmash eclectic, just like the rest of the house

ruddynorah · 04/12/2007 12:48

ours doesn't match but it tones in sort of. just have silver, glass and white decorations on tree including disco balls, balls of fluff, glass raindrop things etc. all things i've collected.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 04/12/2007 12:53

Well house is sort of neutral and very open plan. Tree is green with a sort of theme of red, green, gold, wood and clear glass. Am introducing silver this year to try and lift it a bit as thought it was a bit dull last year. May have just needed more lights though.

I have a friend who does the new decs every year and a new theme. Can't bear the waste myself and I love all the memories that our stuff has.

Mind you that doesn't stop me buying something new every year but I now buy a big statement ornament or something. Have just bought a gorgeous silver (coloured not real!) metal reindeer that is beautiful. It is about a foot high and has lovely antlers. It's something that I will love every year and it will be passed on to someone who loves it.

kittylouise · 04/12/2007 12:54

No, no, no, can't stand co-ordinated trees. As some posters have said, Christmas is about the same old crap coming out every year. Most of my baubles were bought when I was pregnant, I have such clear memories of sitting by the tree with my 10 day old baby on Christmas Day. To not have those same old decorations year after year would be sacrilege.

Can;t stand tinsel or multicoloured fairy lights though, but dd has a small artifical tree in her room with the naffest, brightest tinsel and fibre-optic rope lights on it.

OrmIrian · 04/12/2007 13:25

I think that white lights are essential buda with that colour scheme - our tree is the same and can look quite subdued without the lights. We have about 100 lights on a 6ftish tree...and no it's not in the slightest bit green I know...

Don't have thought-out decor ...let alone a matching tree
So.. no

Lazarou · 04/12/2007 13:44

We have red and gold wallpaper on one wall, so the decorations on the tree and my shelves match it very well.

SantasSmartArse · 04/12/2007 13:49

God yes. But then I am so anal I'm almost inside-out.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 04/12/2007 13:54

I agree OrmIrian. I am planning on buying a couple more sets of lights this week. Also I think the lights we have are not overly bright.

Tree is 6ft and I am planning way more than 100 lights!

NadineBaggott · 04/12/2007 13:55

do I flip!

NappiesLaGloriainexcelsis · 04/12/2007 13:58

i did my tree yesterday. well, the ds's and i did. i only got out the silver and a few green things so its all matching and coordinated and tasteful.

and now i dont like it coz its bloody tasteful and poncy and boring! may have to strip it and cover it in tat instead
