I know it's a bit pointless but thought it would be nice to start the tradition. Anybody have any ideas on a suitable advent calendar?

Are you wanting it to not be chocolate?

MrsGilly1 · 07/09/2021 12:20

What about a book advent - get some books and each day you read a book together?

Or you could do activities so could be day out to see santa, making Christmas cookies, watch a Christmas film etc xx

We got a lovely wooden one that makes a little Christmas village. DD loved seeing what figure would be inside each day and putting it in place. I forget the make now, but something like that might be nice.

SylvanasWindrunner · 07/09/2021 12:25

Oh and we also got one from the Great Little Trading Company that's a wooden Christmas tree you hang little wooden animals on every day. They don't have their Christmas stuff up yet this year though.

That does sound lovely

Not a great pic as it was at the start of Dec so it's a bit barren, but gives an idea!

I found one on Etsy with different nativity characters that you stick onto a stable scene every day, I think they had a couple of versions of it.

Igmum · 07/09/2021 12:38

We had a fuzzy Velcro nativity scene where you add a character/donkey/camel/palm tree a day and build up to the baby Jesus on 24th. DD got so excited she added the baby on about day two, long before Mary and Joseph made an appearance. I was looking for the fuzzy Social Workers investigating the abandoned child Grin

Actually it was not on the high street, it was a bit more than I'd usually spend but I also wanted it to be a tradition! www.notonthehighstreet.com/jollyfine/product/nativity-advent-calendar?utm_source=transactional&utm_medium=email&utm_content=product_title&utm_campaign=transactional-checkout-placed-to-customer

Ha!

This is a lovely idea though, on the lookout for one of these! DS will be 2 by Christmas so might just be into this kind of thing

Organix do one I got from boots which has the baby flapjacks etc in. My little boy loved it

Stompythedinosaur · 07/09/2021 12:47

We got one with little pockets and put a finger puppets in for each day - you can get packs of 10 finger puppets very cheaply on amazon. We did the same the next year with farmyard animals from a cheap multipack.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/09/2021 12:49

We also have the Melissa and Doug Advent calendar with a magnetic tree where you add a magnetic bauble every day from that age. It still gets used now and my eldest is 10.

DriftGames · 07/09/2021 12:59

Following! Currently looking at a book one for my will have just turned 2 year old!

Cherryrainbow · 07/09/2021 13:51

I'm just sticking to a milky bar one for my lo lol, she will be 15months old x

GameSetMatch · 07/09/2021 14:33

How about a ‘toot toot’ one, the toys say 1-5 years so might be a good start? I bought it for my son when he was one and four years later the toys are still played with, especially the sleigh. www.vtech.co.uk/product/detail/17232/Toot_Toot_Drivers_Advent_Calendar

Popcornbetty · 07/09/2021 14:34

We just did milky bar one at that age.

My eldest got an earlier version of this for his 1st Christmas. He's 6 now and it still comes out every year in December.

If you join their birthday club they send you 20% off codes too- if you put down a child with a birthday in the next few weeks

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 07/09/2021 16:27

Honestly, don’t start on anything fancy- you have years ahead of you if you go down the novelty ones. Either the ones like above that you build or the fabric ones with little pockets that you just put chocs in. My children are young adults now and they still say it’s the start of Christmas when I hang that up. Traditions are great.

CorpusCallosum · 07/09/2021 16:35

We had a little tree and a basket of baby safe decs so DD could choose one each day.

End of day 1 I picked up 1 bauble from the floor and put it back on the tree... by day 10 and picking up 10 decorations and the meltdowns over only being able to choose one I just left the basket and the tree on the side and gave up on advent meaning anything for a 1yo.
