Or think it an odd thing to give?

Mum has just retired and has started showing an interest in making jams etc. Was thinking of getting her some jam jars, labels, lids and a thermometer thingey (she was having probs getting it to right setting point). Thinking I could put it in a box as one present... What is the MN opinion on this?? Can't help feeling its not a good present.

I would be chuffed as a train. She is your mother. It's her job to be pleased with your presents.

RosaLuxMundi · 30/11/2007 23:10

I would be pleased - as long as it came with a good jam making book too.

JoyeuxNoelBiggy · 30/11/2007 23:10

Sounds splendid!

That sounds fab Floss. I bought a jam thermometer years ago and it has been sooo useful.

What a different idea! So much better than a box off a shelf - shows you've put some real thought into it!

ibroughtcake · 30/11/2007 23:13

It is personal, well thought out and unique to her, so yes a very very good present

FlossALump · 30/11/2007 23:13

I think she knows what she is doing - made quince jam and lovely lovely marmalade - sent me back with two jars!! All in recycled jars atm, which is fine but just hoped having nice new jars to put it in would just be well, nicer for her!

If that is what she is interested in then go for it!

Parents are really hard to buy for! You could make up a lovely box and put lots of extras in, such as labels, nice pens, covers for the tops of the jams, even elastic bands. If I were into jam making then I would be thrilled that someone had put some thought behind it!

Thanks LL!

Sounds like a nice idea for someone who is into making jam.

AllBuggiedOut · 01/12/2007 09:00

I have bought my mum the Lakeland jars and lids, which I think she will really like. Hadn't thought of a thermometer, but will go and check one out now!

perpetualworrier · 01/12/2007 09:34

I & my Mum would love this, especially if a good book on Jam amking was included, but my MIL would be furious that she had been bought kitchen stuff for a present, but then she is odd in any number of ways

FlossALump · 01/12/2007 10:32

oh, so is mine pepetual!!

as a jam-maker, yes, it would make a nice present. If it wasn't christmas (i.e. busy) I'd add a load of fruit to the present too

allmytimeonmumsnet · 01/12/2007 11:03

Fabulous personal present - as long as YOU like jam. Think you will get a lot of "gifts" back from it

Katymac · 01/12/2007 11:06

I'd love it too

WHat about some orange (for marmalade) as they will keep til after christmas

PrincessSnowLife · 01/12/2007 11:12

aha - oranges! clever katymac!
(she fixes wood burning stoves too, you know! )
