..after children are in bed and we are left with my parents and dh parents who are all staying at ours overnight (why oh why did this seem such a good idea when we arranged it back in August??).

On the basis that we will all be suffering to greater or lesser degrees from having had too much to drink, too much to eat, too many presents, too much festive cheer....I really don't want to resort to the TV.

I need a game that everybody can join in with, has no complicated rules to read, gives everybody a laugh or two and doesn't involve much brain power...any ideas?

dont know, we are usually all pissed and doing karaoke badly at that stage

fryalot · 27/11/2007 09:46

after the kids have gone to bed - pinch their Christmas board games (assuming you've given them some)

Otherwise, you'll have to resort to trivial pursuit and your fil will get EVERY question right because he knows everything and the ones he gets wrong will only because the question was wrong actually and he knew what he was talking about and if the people who make the bloody game don't know the answers to their own questions then how can they expect anyone to play the bloody game properly oh sod it I'm off to bed (or is that just us )

dressedupnowheretogotilxmas · 27/11/2007 09:47

whoops

Slouchy · 27/11/2007 09:48

Yeah, karaoke machine ace.
Rapidough good fun - basically pictionary with playdough
Parlour games like charades always good when people are pissed. In The Manner Of is hilarious.

Yes I totally agree we are mad (think I might have had a couple of glasses of wine when I agreed to this!) but now we've got ourselves into this situation I'm desperately trying to think of ways to avoid the potential fallout a la Squonk!

We played these last year and they went donr a treat!

Mr & Mrs quiz, you need to write some questions and get the person to answer them then ask the same questions to their spouse and see if they match.

Warpping presents, split in pairs (not your own partners, then give each pair some wrapping paper, scissors, tape and ribbon and box each (should be loads left over from the presents) then each pair has to join together with one arm around the others waist and use the free arms to wrap the present, the best wrapped pressie wins (this works better if you are pissed!)

Hope this helps

Based on track record of in-laws I suspect Mr & Mrs game might well end in divorce or at least in awkward sulky silence....

Your second idea sounds great fun but not sure the parents would go for it...might think about that one though

Very easy to learn - entertaining particularly after a couple of drinks

dustystar · 27/11/2007 09:54

Charades is always a laugh when you've had a couple. Pictionary is good too or an alternative to drawing the clue is to use plasticine/modelling clay.

A good game you can buy is 'pass the bomb'

jelliebelly · 27/11/2007 09:54

Am thinking I might just hide in our bedroom with the telly and whatever is left of the chocs and alchohol and see how they all entertain themselves actually...

I'd forgotten about Pictionary - I'm sure we used to have one of those somewhere - will have to have a search.

Another game we play is the rizla game where you write the name of a person (should be a famous one!) on a rizla and stick it on the head of the person next to you. You then each have to ask qestions until you guess who you are. The questions can only have yes or no answers and each person can keep asking questions until they get a "no"

harleyd · 27/11/2007 10:03

we do that one on boxing morning after the bottle of cava cure dustystar

Second the vote for Rapidough, we never seem to get tired of this, fun for adults and for children alike.

It can get rude at times - I remember the time my very prim DD2 created a long pink upright column with a pair of globes at the base. She even sculpted a teeny-tiny hole at the tip. We were on the floor in helpless sniggery mirth as the thing developed a droop to the left, especially when she announced as a clue 'Daddy has one of these. At least, he used to have. I haven't seen it for some time...'

It turned out to be a 'hand held drill'.

Tovik · 27/11/2007 10:04

everybody gets pissed and someone leaves the room and everybody else has to guess who it is

useless contribution i know

bigfatbump · 27/11/2007 10:15

What about the name game - everyone has to write a set number (depending on how long you want the game to last-10ish is usually about right)of names of famous people on slips of paper and put them in a hat. Split into pairs/teams and everyone has 1 minute to pull slips out and describe the person so that the team can guess who they are. You have as many goes as you can in a minute but can't pass on any. Like thay used to do on 'they think its all over'
