Anyone got the remote control dalek - does it run on carpet and is it as fragile as it looks?

Am thinking of getting a 12" remote control dalek for ds1 (age 6) this Christmas as he loves the daleks, but a bit concerned that the eye stalk in particular doesn't look like it'll withstand much. He's not rough with his toys, but they do get fair wear and tear all the same.

Also, does it cope with carpets - not terribly thick pile, but carpets all the same.

Has it got a lot of play in your family?

I don't normally like getting toys of shows, because we've been burned with crappy manufacture before, and £35 is a lot of money for one if it turns out to be a bit of a dud. Any experience gratefully received!

I'm sticking with the 6 inch one. A foot high one would drive me nuts!
I want to play with the little Rc K-9 I've got Ds for Christmas. It's only about 2 inches long!!

PersonalClown · 23/11/2007 16:02

Sorry. I was absolutely no help, was I?

UnquietDad · 23/11/2007 16:03

It goes on carpets. However, the eyestalk is the most fragile bit - DD had hes at 5 and tried to pick it up by the eyestalk - it broke!

Desiderata · 23/11/2007 16:06

You're right to be concerned about the eye stalk. It won't last five minutes, and they're a bit 'lumpy' on carpet.

The littles ones are much more fun and zippy, imo.

If he likes Dr Who, the Tardis model is pretty good, and it's only £15.00. It makes that fantastic whooshing noise, and has lights, etc.

RubberDuck · 23/11/2007 16:06

I want a K9 ... for ME ... they look fab! Trying to resist though, and ds1 has only watched half way through season 1 of Dr Who so wouldn't know who K9 is (boo).

Problem is, I'd get the 6 inch one, but this is his main present. I've got his brother the ELC keyboard (the one with the little stool) but am completely flummoxed with what to get ds1 - yet again I gave all the best ideas to the grandparents (why do I do that every year?!)

Ooo... so might be better to get 6" dalek and the TARDIS model then? (I'm a sucker for the whooshy noise)

It's true of "Real" Daleks as well!

Always aim for the eyestalk...

"My vision is impaired! I cannot see!"

PersonalClown · 23/11/2007 16:10

This is the K9 I got DS as I didn't want the large one taking up room in my house.
I'm only going to hear 'Affirmative' and 'Exterminate' all Xmas day! That's why God invented iPods!!

RubberDuck · 23/11/2007 16:11

Oh dear

WHY are toys from tv shows so badly made?!! Wanted to get ds2 the Underground Ernie set last year until I was put off by reports of it being really flimsy

sigh back to the drawing board.

We have the big dalek and K9. K9 is much more fun IMHO, but both of them have vulnerable parts (Daleks eyestalk and antennae bits, K9's ears), however they have been designed so that they 'snap off' in such a way that you can snap them back on again (as long as your dc haven't lost them under the furniture in the meantime ). Both work on our playroom carpet (which is worn out and not at all fluffy)

RubberDuck · 23/11/2007 16:29

Oh that's encouraging, Millarkie - so it is easy to fix?

UnquietDad · 23/11/2007 17:00

Yes, we fixed Dalek's eyestalk back.

He said "My vision is restored!"

southeastastra · 23/11/2007 17:02

our eyestalk has lasted and ds(6) is brutal. he's looking at me now. it's cute, we put a hat on him for special occasions.

Found a black one on the John Lewis site for £25 Bought it...

Thanks everyone! (Let's just hope the eye stalk remains intact for at least 24hrs after opening!!)

they're quite sturdy rubberduck. ours would have broken ages ago otherwise. it's a year and a half old. they're fun

foxinsocks · 23/11/2007 20:55

ours is broken

eyestalk came off, so did the flashing ear things!

it still 'speaks' though

also the aerial came off the remote

southeastastra · 23/11/2007 20:56

oh

LyraSilvertongue · 24/11/2007 14:15

DS1 got one last Christmas day and within a few hours a piece has broken off. It has become steadily more broken as time has gone on and is now sitting next to the washing machine, abandoned. So I can't really recommend them.
