Charades?

Or did you mean a boxed game?

Any of the balancing games - tumbledown / jenga / balance the plastic monkeys on the tree etc

Or - I've forgotten its name - the one where there are lots of skewers through a tube and you have to pull them out without letting the marbles fall.

foxinsocks · 09/11/2007 19:43

monopoly (or junior monopoly) if you can bear it

Whizzz · 09/11/2007 19:44

Pop up Pirate

Uno

a friend of mine has just designed and produced a new game called 'Caveman' where you get to collect resources and build up your tribe of cave people. My two kids (ds is 7) really like playing it and you can play the game on a number of different levels IYSWIM

seeker · 09/11/2007 19:48

Just came on to suggest Uno!
Mousetrap.
Go Fish
Mancala
Chinese Checkers
Draughts.
A fab game fro the ELC called Yo Ho Pirate - we've been playing this since ds was 3 - he's now 6!

BroccoliSpears · 09/11/2007 19:49

Kerplunk. That's it.

I've never heard of uno - by the number of people recommending it I assume I'm missing out.

PurplePillow · 09/11/2007 19:50

my db (a couple of xmas's ago) made up a quiz and split family into groups and focused questions on each persons fav things incl dd aged 5 (at the time) fav prog and it went down really well

huffpuff · 09/11/2007 19:51

whats uno all about then?

You are - it'a a brilliant card game that all ages can play. My ds could beat his sister by low cunning when he was 4 and she was 9 - and it's fun for grown ups . We occasionally play it with friends without children. Alcohol ads an edge!. There's another game called Skip-bo that lots of people have recommended to me but I've never played it.

foxinsocks · 09/11/2007 19:57

oh Uno is fab.

It's a card game. Pack of cards with different colours and numbers. You have to match the number or the colour of the last card put down. Object is to get rid of all your cards. You also have cards which mean the next person has to pick up more cards, change direction, change colour, skip a turn.

Uno Extreme is when the cards are in a card holder and you have to press a button on it when someone puts down a card that says you have to and it shoots out cards at you (so sometimes it shoots out 1 sometimes like 6 or 7). It's great.

foxinsocks · 09/11/2007 19:59

it's simple - that's what makes it great for everyone. But if you sit yourself next to dp/dh, you can really do him over by saving up all your nasty cards and unleashing them one after another

Katymac · 09/11/2007 20:00

Spillikins

From www.jesters.com (I think?)

seeker · 09/11/2007 20:02

It's funny - I asked exactly the same question 18 months or so ago and that's how we became Uno addicts!

Uno
Cadoo
nursery rhyme charades (or disney movies or anything that would 5yo advantage and embarrass the rest)

Not a game but fun: requires old magazines, scissors, blank paper and glue. Each person chooses another in the family and makes a collage from pictures in the magazines that remind them of their chosen family member. We played this when i was a child and my little brother - then about 5 - almost always stuck a sexy bloke on my mum's page (for a new husband)...and mine was always full of aeroplanes.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 09/11/2007 20:12

hangman

hewlettsdaughter · 09/11/2007 20:12

Rumble in the Jungle. Or Mousetrap. But make sure the five year old knows not to swallow the silver balls!

pinkbubble · 09/11/2007 20:15

Def Uno all the family have played this game for many an hour!

Also a good game is Headbandz

What about Yatztee, with a little help I am sure your 5yr old could take part!
