In a cafe dd was smiling at old man with white beard at nxt table. His wife said "She must think he's Father Christmas!" No, she has no idea who that is. Do I tell her now b4 X-mas this year or just wait?

She won't get it. You can tell her if you like, but ds1 never reallty got it and he is 5 in April. Some kids don't hve a great interst in people.

But certainly at 18 months it will go completely over her head/

DD1 was 17 months 2 Christmas's ago and DD2 will be 23 months this Christmas, TBH they don't understand. DD1 came downstairs and there were new toys for her to play with I think thats all she could grasp. DD1 is frightened of FC but likes the reindeers.

Is there any point taking her to a grotto? or is it just for nostalgic photos?

DD1 kind of understood at 2.9

Nbg · 07/11/2007 08:41

Just say "Oh its father christmas" when you see an image of him or something.

She really wont get it at all.
I think last year was the first year my dd understood it and she was 3 and a bit.

My 18 month old and my 2 1/2 year old would probably scream the place down if i took them to a grotto.

Oblomov · 07/11/2007 09:18

Ds has a book about father christmas. But he has never been to see one. And he has never had a present from santa. Thay are from mummy and daddy or nana or who-ever.
Most young children are frightened when they are taken to see a santa. My friends daughter was 2.9 last year and she screamed and screamed.

I took Tom last year to see Santa (in a very dogy Grotto that was just a garden shed, lol). He was 8 months and I just wanted a photo with him and Santa. This year, I plan to take him to the one at the House of Fraser in Glasgow! But he has no idea who Santa is!

Leslaki · 07/11/2007 20:49

DD knew EXACTLY who Santa was at 18!!! She is a Christmas fanatic now at the ripe old age of 4!!! She has always loved the decorations, lights etc of grottos and used to point at Santa and 'say' his name at 18m!!!

Depends on older siblings really. If it's your first you can get away with a sock and a tangerine but otherwise, let the older ones explain it.

berolina · 07/11/2007 22:28

Oh goodness, at that age (ds1 was 19 months last Christmas) I wouldn't bother. Not entirely sure how I feel about SC anyway, tbh.

MaureenMLove · 07/11/2007 22:31

I don't think you need to explain at all. It just happens. The only problem I had was dd couldn't say it and used to call him Father Pissmas!

dd666 · 07/11/2007 22:35
