A bit like the queue at the deli counter! Give out numbers (I think we use raffle tickets or number the santa tickets), hang something outside which shows which number santa is on, then people can choose whether to wait or come back.

Another tip: use the queue opportunity to sell raffle tickets if you are doing a raffle. Also, take trays of tea/coffee/juice/mulled wine/cakes whatever to sell to those standing in the queue.

Weeellll - we have Ronald McDonald coming to entertain the queue! (Waiting to be judged!!!)

we don't have massive queues because there is so much else going on. They have the craft stalls in the hall, then games along the hallways, then activities in the classrooms. Then they have the present room, parents donate presents leading up to xmas, then the kids get to go in with a £1 or so and buy presents for their parents and giftwrap it. It takes a good few hours to get round, and we had no queue at all to see father xmas.

Our school has 2 santas! Very carefully worked out so it's not obvious. Plus a timed ticket so the queues aren't too bonkers.

Last year I had a bit of an oops with my Santa. I was in charge of the grotto. We use a big room. For an hour before the fair children who's parents are helping get to see Santa.

Each Santa does an hours stint. The way we swap our Santas is to shove one out of the back door (outside) and another one comes out of the staff room back door (next to the grotto back door) and through into the grotto.

Unfortunately I shoved one Santa through the grotto door while the other was coming out of the staff room door. We then had trouble with the doors so I had two Santas stuck outside for a moment. I glanced over and too my utter horror we were in full view of a huge line of people waiting to get into the fair

Must remind this years committee to handle the swop over with more caution.

For ours you have to buy tickets in a 15 minute time slot beforehand.
