Going to get some for DS this Christmas. He was 4 in June but is quite good with fiddly things.

He is car/vehicle daft so I'm thinking something with some wheels.

Can anyone recommend a good 'starter' set?

This looks a good starter, includes the base and wheels to make what you like!

or if you want to spend a bit more

My ds (also 4) really likes Lego City. He has the police station and the fire station, and we've got him a few bits to go with those for Christmas. They're a bit fiddly for him to put together himself (much to dhs delight) but he plays with them, and rebuilds small sections of them himself. Plus it means they'll last him quite a while.

My DS got "this" recently for his 4th Birthday

The lego deulxe set is good - it costs about £30.00

Ds1 is 4 and absolutely loves it.

He also had a fire engine for his birthday which I think was age 4 and above (could be 5). It is way too difficult for him to build - it took me almost and hour! - and falls apart.

Needless to say it is now in the loft.

My DSs are 4 and 5 and love Lego. We do find the sets a bit tricky though and they both prefer to use ther imaginations to make whatever they want. A basic box is probably fine for starters I would say

My ds also got into Lego City sets when he was just 5. Things like the fire engine set, or digger. I think if he is good with fiddly things he should be able to cope with some of the smaller Lego City sets, and you can add to them as he gets older.

The second one looks ideal, Furball
