Having a fun debate with my London based sister and Bil, both Firefighters who recently had their watch Christmas Lunch at the fire station. My sister who I agree with was shocked at Yorkshire Puddings being served as part of Christmas dinner, we have never had them ever at Christmas much to her colleagues surprise, yes they go with Christmas dinner, or no they belong far away with the sprouts!?!

Yorkshires with everything!
I often make too many so I can have the extras with cream and syrup

Parky04 · 24/12/2020 14:45

Of course you have Yorkshire Puddings with a Christmas dinner. You put your pigs in blankets inside so you have extra room on your plate!

rollinggreenhills · 24/12/2020 15:01

Yorkshire puddings go with beef and all other roasts and are also acceptable with anything resembling a sausage.

Since pigs in blankets are sausages, then I hereby decree that Yorkshire puddings CAN be served with Christmas dinner.

I don't like Yorkshire puddings. There I've said it. I await my punishment for this blasphemy.

I just feel sorry for you.

There might be a treatment you could try ...

People are having mash AND roast potatoes but not Yorkshires?! Madness

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/12/2020 16:36

I'm vegetarian and always have Yorkshires with my roasts. Bar the potatoes, it's my favourite part!

CorvusPurpureus · 24/12/2020 21:00

Yorkies with beef/lamb, stuffing with poultry or pork. Special dispensation for toad in the hole, though. That's, um, different.

I just can't see how anyone would need to cram them in for Xmas day dinner - you've already got turkey, at least a couple of carby veg, stuffing...plus a thumping great pudding to follow. Seems a bit overkill to be honest.

& bleh to cauliflower cheese - which I love - that definitely doesn't belong on a plate with meat, vegetables & gravy. Might as well get the ketchup out & have done with it!

NaughtipussMaximus · 24/12/2020 21:44

We have them with Christmas dinner because DS loves them.

CoolShoeshine · 24/12/2020 23:02

Mmmm yes definitely. I like to do quite sizeable individual ones and fill them with little pigs in blankets.
I’d happily bump off bread sauce, cranberry sauce, red cabbage and parsnips for a Yorkshire pud.

DeRigueurMortis · 24/12/2020 23:06

A roast dinner without Yorkshire Puddings is simply a wasted opportunity.

The best bit is putting gravy inside them and then when you've used the gravy on the rest of your dinner you have a fresh supply and all the flavour has had time to soak into the YP.

😀

DramaAlpaca · 24/12/2020 23:11

We never had Yorkshire puddings with Christmas dinner growing up, but my DC love them so much we do now.

I've never heard of cauliflower cheese with Christmas dinner. That just sounds weird to me. And as for bread sauce, just no.

CeibaTree · 24/12/2020 23:24

We always have them with christmas dinner. We do happen to be having beef this year, but we'd still have them if it was a goose year.

I just don't get the love for gravy. Why on earth would you want it to soak into your yorkshire puddings? They are meant to be crisp not soggy.

Do other countries have gravy on their meals? We seem obsessed in making meals soggy, mushy and like baby food.

They are best when they are both.

The gravy soggy bits at the bottom and crisp at the top. Happy to help!

Merry Christmas!

ChasingRainbows19 · 25/12/2020 13:02

I’m Northern but I’m from a southern family. Yorkshire puddings is with beef not Christmas dinner. However loads I know have it at Christmas and only as a great food. Dunno if that’s a north/south thing or just preferences

Amummyatlast · 25/12/2020 13:05

Non-Yorkshire people shouldn’t make up rules about Yorkshire puddings. They should be with every type of roast (where did this beef only thing come from?) and several other meals as well (Yorkshire puddings with stew, mmm).

Pipandmum · 25/12/2020 13:57

Turkey dinner to me is:
Turkey with stuffing
Roasties
Sweet potato
Brussel sprouts
French beans
Carrots
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Pigs in blankets
Christmas cake plus another dessert
Cheese board with chutney and biscuits for later.

So people seem to have their own traditions, and this year one of my kids asked for Yorkshires, and I'm happy to provide.
