Having a fun debate with my London based sister and Bil, both Firefighters who recently had their watch Christmas Lunch at the fire station. My sister who I agree with was shocked at Yorkshire Puddings being served as part of Christmas dinner, we have never had them ever at Christmas much to her colleagues surprise, yes they go with Christmas dinner, or no they belong far away with the sprouts!?!

There is no place for Yorkshire puddings at Christmas dinner.

SuePreem · 24/12/2020 05:40

ha, no there's no place for yorkshire's with turkey. They are definitely a beef thing.

we are having them with our turkey as my children disagree with me.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/12/2020 05:50

Never did growing up (Lancashire) but we had Christmas dinner at a friend’s (Berkshire) a few years ago and she served them. Since then my family demand them 🙄.

icklekid · 24/12/2020 05:51

Not previously but it is my ds favourite part of a roast so will definitely be having them this year!! My mum makes the most amazing red cabbage but only I would eat it in my household so I am having to forgo it... 😔

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 24/12/2020 05:59

Yorkshires go with any roast. Although traditionally only beef.
Bread sauce is the devil's spunk and has no place on any meal.

We went to the carvery one year for a family meal. My Auntie was most put out that my DS got to yorkshires and the rest of us only got 1. When I pointed out that's because he had a veggie carvery she said "but i don't really like the meat. I only asked for a tiny slice of gammon". I told her to order a veggie option next time.

Thehollyandtheirony · 24/12/2020 07:22

We have them with beef or pork but not with turkey.
Not sure why, maybe it makes the plate too beige!

IamChipmunk · 24/12/2020 07:35

I agree, Yorkshires do not go on an xmas dinner. We never had them growing up, only ever with roast beef.
(Always bread sauce with turkey and chicken although I also agree its horrid!)

However I now hav my own dc 6&4 and they love Yorkshires and we usually have them with any roast (started out as the guaranteed 'thing they would eat'!)
This year its only dc's and me and dh for Xmas dinner so we will be having Yorkshires!
I cant make them though, they never work, so aldi ones!!

lazylinguist · 24/12/2020 07:59

We only have them with beef, but I can't say I find it in any way shocking that people have them with other roasts. Grin

What I do find a bit odd is people having both mashed and roast potatoes. Confused.

ilovespinach · 24/12/2020 08:02

Cauliflower cheese on Christmas dinner?????

Big yes to yorkies here (from the Midlands)

CarolinaWeeper · 24/12/2020 08:23

I've never had Yorkshire's on a Christmas dinner but doing them this year because I love them and because it's been a crap year so I'm going all out for Christmas dinner.... they'll make me happy.

You can make your own then freeze them after they're cooked and they just take a few minutes to warm up in the oven a la Aunt Bessie's but much nicer.

dementedma · 24/12/2020 08:28

Agree bread sauce is 🤮
Bread? Sauce?
Also no to cauliflower cheese due to vomit inducing co-mingling of cheese sauce and gravy.
We have:
Turkey crown
Roasties
Red cabbage
Parsnips
Sprouts with chorizo
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Yorkshires
Gravy

Throwntothewolves · 24/12/2020 08:32

I would have said no in pre-child years, but DS absolutely loves them so they are now part of Christmas.

ODFOx · 24/12/2020 08:53

We don't have Yorkshire's with Christmas dinner, however we do have a batter pudding made with cubed leftover gammon at some point before NY. Delicious with leftover red cabbage ( if there is any).

KatherineJaneway · 24/12/2020 08:55

Of course they belong on a Christmas dinner! Wouldn't be one without them Xmas Grin

ArosGartref · 24/12/2020 08:56

Everybody loves them so why not?

Hazelmazel · 24/12/2020 08:58

Much like other PPs, we never used to have them, DC asked for them one year and now they are an essential component (along with cauliflower cheese). Whatever works 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wouldn't ever eat pigs in blankets or stuffing so they don't feature in my Christmas dinner. To each their own

BounceyBumblebee · 24/12/2020 09:02

Yorkshires to only be served with beef is a snobby middle class thing

In the place they came from, Yorkshire, they are eaten with everything and were originally used to make a meal more filling cheaply.

DM was given then before every meal as a child.

You can have them when ever and however you want. I like them with fish.

Food rules are sad. If it taste good do it. Why wouldn't you.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 24/12/2020 09:03

Yorkshires with all roasts.

We had pancakes for breakfast. Making the Yorkshires in the Aga today. Stick in a carrier bag in the drinks fridge. Reheat tomorrow.

We have Yorkshires 1-2 times a week

thismeansnothing · 24/12/2020 09:07

Do what you like.

But I was brought up that Yorkshire puddings are for with roast beef and roast beef only

tenredthings · 24/12/2020 09:09

Roast leg of lamb with Yorkshire's and all the trimmings for Xmas in our house ! No one likes turkey or ham.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2020 09:11

Aeons ago when I was a 1st year student, my Yorkshire landlady used to serve Yorkshire pudding - with sultanas in - and gravy, as a first course before the meat.
And very nice it was too, though as a southerner I was a mite startled at first.

She also ate chitterlings (I didn’t know what they were at the time but she never gave them to me) and once served me some cold meat that looked a bit like tongue, but paler.
I asked politely what it was.
‘Udder.’ 😱
I did eat it! - having been brung up to be polite and eat whatever you were given.

lynsey91 · 24/12/2020 09:11

Why do they only go with beef? Me and DH are Londoners and have yorkshires with every roast.

We are having:

nut roast
roast potatoes
roast parsnips
mashed parsnips
roast carrots
steamed carrots
roast brussels
cauliflower
peas
mushroom stuffing
bread sauce
yorkshire puddings

No gravy. Neither of us like gravy as it is vile and makes food soggy

AriesTheRam · 24/12/2020 09:14

Every meal involving gravy should have Yorkshires imo.We are Yorkshire born and bred and we love them! We are having them with beef tomorrow so traditional for once!

shoogal · 24/12/2020 09:14

Yes! Absolutely! Husband makes his own huge ones! Delicious.

Jinglingandnotmingling · 24/12/2020 09:15

Yorkshire puddings with turkey is just weird. Chipolatas, at least 3 types of stuffing, cranberry sauce and bread sauce are the only acceptable accompaniments here!
