Been picking up non-perishables as I’ve been going along. Need to do fresh food, Veg, cheese etc.
Was planning on 23rd but now wondering if that will be too late as imagine with more people staying home and having to buy for thier little family things might run our earlier this year?
Eg in normal years for example with 4 households going to one house for Xmas dinner only 1 pack of sprouts, 1 jar of cranberry etc will be needed but if those 4 households are now all staying home then they will all buy a bag of sprouts and a jar of cranberry (as not really easy to get 1/4 bag of sprouts for instance)

Done delivered Christmas Eve.

Chailatte20 · 19/12/2020 21:48

I'm collecting my near order from the butchers on Tues as it was the only slot he had left Shock I've ordered a corn fed organic chicken as that's what the kids wanted. Do I refrigerate it or freeze it?

Chailatte20 · 19/12/2020 21:48

Meat order it should say

caringcarer · 19/12/2020 22:01

I have been buying bits and pieces for wees. I have a Morrisons delivery late on 21st which was latest date I could get. This has cream, cheeses and frozen desserts in etc. I got a large fresh turkey crown this evening from Aldi and 2 packs of potatoes, a red cabbage, 2 X carrots, sprouts and 2 Swedes. All veg 19 p each. Turkey crown dated use by 26th December. I won't be going out again do I have put it in fridge and switched fridge down to 2 degrees. Best I can do. I am also cooking a beef on Xmas day but I already have that in freezer. My 2 adult sons who live at home with me usually go to their Dad's for Boxing day but now can't so I will have to cook on Boxing Day too. I have added more buffet good to Morrisons delivery and hope to get away with cooking a full English breakfast snacks and chocs through day and then a hot buffet at 5pm. I would get a turkey.ot crown asap as now there will probably not be enough fresh ones.

caringcarer · 19/12/2020 22:04

Forgot to add one of sons will pick up a loaf of bread and fresh rolls from local bakery Xmas Eve. I have that on order.

CraftyGin · 19/12/2020 22:06

So, carrots, potatoes, parsnips - I think I will risk Christmas Eve.

Chailatte20 · 19/12/2020 22:07

@caringcarer could you cook the beef for boxing day instead to save you from buying something extra? The turkey crown and all the trimmings should do the 3 of you for Christmas day.

cariadlet · 19/12/2020 22:17

We do our weekly shop on Sundays anyway so will get most stuff tomorrow. We're in tier 4 and dp isn't looking forward to going because he thinks there will be a lot of panic buyers.

I'll pick up a bit of fresh veg midweek.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 19/12/2020 22:22

We have online grocery delivery once a week (and have done for about 10 yrs, not a covid thing). I have been buying bits and pieces of cupboard Christmas stuff for weeks and our main delivery will come on evening of 22nd, that's also veg box day.

I'll go down our local high street on probably Wednesday to buy nice cheese and anything else we might have forgotten, but not likely to be much (unless big cock up with online shop)

pilates · 19/12/2020 22:26

Delivery on 22nd

sarahC40 · 19/12/2020 22:40

Did ours Friday night at five - Tesco’s was practically empty and there was plenty of time to check use by dates etc and no queue for the till. Did my mum’s shopping at 12:30 today at Waitrose and again, no queue and plenty of stock for after 25th. No queue for the till and a massive marquee outside for click and collect. Least stressful shopping experience ever at Christmas -rest of 2020 Christmas can get to fuck. Just got to get the capon etc from the local butchers on Wed and lemons...must get lemons (don’t need them).

christmasathomeagain · 19/12/2020 22:42

Got most of it. Got a click and collect for 23rd which is mainly cheese, milk, cream and breakfast items and starter.

If worst goes to worse we could manage a Christmas dinner with what we have in now.

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 19/12/2020 22:42

I’ve got most stuff already, either fresh or in the freezer. Click & collect on Wednesday is mainly our usual weekly shop with a few fresh bits.
Tier 4 from midnight here, and household member is self-isolating so I am thankful for being prepared.

earthyfire · 19/12/2020 23:07

I never go mad pointless shops are always open if I need anything.

DontBeShelfish · 19/12/2020 23:20

My stuff is arriving tomorrow. Just hope there won't be too many things missing or swapped from it - I get the feeling people will panic buy tonight at our local supermarket.

PronkWine · 19/12/2020 23:22

I have shopping delivered the same day every week, inc Xmas week so here weds

caringcarer · 19/12/2020 23:35

@chailotte20, there are 5 of us but 1 veggie so having a homemade lentil loaf, and one does not like turkey so I always cook a beef for him. I have ordered stuff like mini pies, chicken dippers and mini Kiev's for boxing day buffet with some salad.

Ltdannygreen · 19/12/2020 23:41

We’ve just got the veg to get now, will get that probably the weds, it’s from my mums work so she will be able to put aside whilst she’s at work and I will go pick it up later in the day.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 19/12/2020 23:45

We’re pretty much done now - had our grocery delivery today and veg delivery will be tomorrow. A couple of things missed off the order so I’ll go out tomorrow to get those. Waiting on a phone call from farm shop to pick up the turkey and gammon, probably on the 23rd.

Saisong · 19/12/2020 23:49

I've been stocking up on non perishables for a while, got my last bits of veg and cheese today. Got the last 4 parsnips in sainsbos in fact! We could quite happily not leave the house for at least a week now (only 4 of us)

Littlemissnutcracker · 19/12/2020 23:50

I'm going out really early Wednesday. I've a few bits done. Christmas pudding, wine, crackers and the freezer is quite full. I will buy a fresh turkey and lots of veg and potatoes.
The supermarket opens at 7am.

blue25 · 19/12/2020 23:55

Got a click and collect on the 23rd.

movingonup20 · 20/12/2020 00:11

I'm going Tuesday for most of it, I have the Turkey, bought today before the latest proclamation from the government. Though the rules are as clear as mud - it says university students are automatically part of their parents (note plural) bubble with no regard for the 60% of students whose parents don't live together?? Think we will proceed as planned

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/12/2020 00:16

What was the deal with turkey this year/with supermarket deliveries? I'd never done a delivery pre-Covid, so I had no idea what to do. Thanks to a MN heads-up I managed to get a Christmas week delivery, but I didn't know you had to pre-order turkeys, & there are none to buy after 19th December. We're going to be having chicken & lots of trimmings - & frankly after everything that's happened this year (& having a check for ovarian cancer on Christmas Eve, after having a breast cancer diagnosis one recent Christmas), I don't really care.

Well, that went downhill fast, but that's my Christmas 2020: pants. Or, on Christmas Eve, no pants. Grin

But I'd like to know what I should've done about getting a turkey. Does anyone know?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/12/2020 00:54

I’ve been picking up bits as I go along, so have stuff in the freezer and in the fridge. Freezer - turkey crown, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing. Fridge - enough cheese to feed 95, Christmas pudding. We have a Sainsbury’s order coming on Monday, then anything missing I can pick up later. Just me and DP this year, so trying to make it as easy as possible.
