This is always my worry if I'm spending too little/much.
Friend 1.a dressing gown, slippers, chocolates and just a costume jewellery watch £50 ish

Friend 2.pjs,slippers,bath bomb,chocolates,festive socks £40 ish

What's your limit ?

£0

Don't get trapped into friend-buying at Christmas. Utter waste of time.

FlyNow · 12/12/2020 02:31

Nothing, I don't buy for friends. It's not about money as I could afford it, I just don't want to buy or receive random unneeded stuff. As thoughtful as you sound, I wouldn't need or want those gifts if I was your friend - if I was the type to wear dressing gowns or slippers I'd already have them (and it's not like they wear out and you need new ones every year), a watch - like most people I don't wear one now, if I did I'd want to pick my own, chocs - OK but I'm dieting, etc. So I'd hate if a friend bought me that massive bag of stuff.

Stillgoings · 12/12/2020 07:06

I only buy for one friend and we spend.aboit £20

MrsHugsxx · 12/12/2020 07:16

Nothing. I used to spend around £60 on my best friend, I'd get her a decent perfume, when I was a single mum of one but now I've got 4 kids I can't afford to do that anymore so I only buy for family now.

whatswithtodaytoday · 12/12/2020 07:17

We don't do Christmas presents with friends, it just gets too expensive. Birthday presents yes, and a little Christmas present for children, but not adult friends.

Tootsietootie · 12/12/2020 07:21

I can't think of anything any of my friends or l need. L hate buying stuff for the sake of buying stuff.

ChalkDinosaur · 12/12/2020 07:21

Around £10 on one, £10-£15 on another, then a £15 secret santa gift with a different group of friends. A couple of other friends I give token gifts to eg. a homemade tree decoration.

In my twenties I spent more on friends but now we've all cut down a bit due to kids etc. Yours sounds fine if everyone is happy with the arrangement Smile

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 12/12/2020 07:27

Used to exchange with my closest friends and spent between 30-50 until we had children and now we agree just To do the kids

heathergem · 12/12/2020 07:32

I spend £50, £25 on 2 x faraway friends who I don't see very often but am close to then about £10 on my 3 x local friends.

I enjoy buying them presents and try to think of original things I know they will like (I hope!).

A tenner on each of their kids (3 friends), otherwise zero.

BusySittingDown · 12/12/2020 07:54

Nowt.

Christmas can be stressful enough without adding friends to the mix.

However, I think that £40-£50 is generous. I spend that on my mother!

Thatwentbadly · 12/12/2020 07:57

£0. We normally go out for dinner together instead.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 12/12/2020 08:05

We do a secret Santa in our friendship group. £50 ish and exchanged over last day of term coffee.
Tends to be one nice item instead of a few things. This year I have got my person a bottle of perfume.

caringcarer · 12/12/2020 08:06

Usually meet up for a meal. Buy birthday gift not Xmas.

Porridgeoat · 12/12/2020 08:30

Home made chutney. Token gift which is woofed down quickly by good friends

£15 on my best friend. Books.

£8 on super close friends. A nice mug or socks

All token gifts really as Xmas is expensive enough as it is. We save our cash for other fun times

Anoisagusaris · 12/12/2020 10:16

@Stepintochristmas Kris Kindle what we call Secret Santa in Ireland. Sorry, didn’t realise it wasn’t used in the U.K.

Yep @Stepintochristmas it’s Kris Kringle in other countries.

Xmasbaby11 · 12/12/2020 13:07

I buy for 5 friends, about £15 each.

Then me and my best friend exchange a stocking! We spend around £75 on each other and enjoy buying bits over the year. We wrap up all the presents and write hints on each one. The day we exchange is a highlight of xmas to me!

CorianderQueen · 12/12/2020 13:13

@actiongirl1978

The last time I bought a friend a Xmas present was about 1993 and it was a forever friends pencil case.

I buy one friend a present every year budget about £25.

Otherwise my money is spent on husband and children. We don't give Xmas gifts to parenta, stopped years ago. Just eat nice food together.

So the last time you bought a friend a present was last year then... not 1993. You buy them it every year.
ChasingRainbows19 · 12/12/2020 13:16

I have four close friends I buy for. Around £20-25. It’s a long standing thing. I wouldn’t spend more really. I’ve other friends who I just buy for the kids or nothing at all as it’s never been a thing.

LosersClub · 12/12/2020 18:52

My 3 closest friends and I have agreed a £5 limit each, just a token gift really.

VioletCharlotte · 12/12/2020 20:54

I buy for my three closest friends. Just something small, around £10 each.

Lollypop4 · 12/12/2020 22:31

nothing! We don't do gifts for each other, still have young families so have enough expense as it is.
