£30-50 on best friend. Depends on what’s the right gift IYSWIM. Up to £15 on token gifts for other friends- wine, chocolates, flowers etc

RainbowCookie · 11/12/2020 17:09

I don’t do any adult gifts, except for my Mum, DH gets a token gift - this year a box of Lindt balls, Christmas is for kids and expensive enough.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 11/12/2020 17:26

£50 is high.
I usually get my regular circle of buddies a little token something. However all but one have December birthdays, so I spend more on that.. This year they have a fancy little bottle of G&T and a small kitsch present for less than £6 each
I spend £15 on do a mini box of unusual food for a close family friend that has everything.
£10 on the neighbour ( pays to keep them happy).

Don’t buy for friends I don’t see more than twice a year or work friends.

Hohomerryxmas · 11/12/2020 17:53

We don't buy for friends, they don't buy for me either.

TheChosenTwo · 11/12/2020 18:15

One of them I usually spend around £150 on, one of them around £75 and then a few who I exchange token gifts, in the region of about £20 for a bottle of fizz and some chocolate or something like that.
Our neighbours we probably spend £20 on too.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/12/2020 18:18

@CorianderQueen

Is it a Mumsnet thing where people don't buy gifts for adults? Parents, siblings, best friends, partners? You don't buy for ANY of them?
I think it is. Along with the want, need, wear poem thing so that children only get four things, three of which are essentials really anyway.

In real life people buy for adults as well as children and I don’t know anyone who buys very little for their children.

We have a close friendship group and do gifts and spend about the same as you OP. I spend less on adult siblings as we only do small gifts as agreed between us.

PiccalilliChilli · 11/12/2020 18:21

I only buy for their kids, about £10-15 each.

Onedropbeat · 11/12/2020 18:21

I make a gift for my closest friend. This year is an essential oil candle blended especially for her

Money is tight from both ends so neither of us expect anything

Sometimes someone initiates secret Santa in other friend groups but I’m not a fan generally and would prefer not to if I didn’t feel too awkward to say so

thaegumathteth · 11/12/2020 20:14

Only buy for one friend - I usually spend between £15-20 but try and get something meaningful not just toiletries or whatever

ChochoCrazyCat · 11/12/2020 20:21

Between £10-£20, it's usually something token like a book/bath stuff/costume jewellery/scarf/candle.

Athinginitself · 11/12/2020 21:59

Me and my closest friend buy for each other. I've spent about 15 in cash but also made her something which she wanted that has probably cost about 30. I buy for a couple of friends from work as well as we usually meet up for a festive drinks but only spend around 10 each on them. Another friend i buy for her kids but not usually her, but saw a book i thought she would like online last week so sent it her in the post.

Bbq1 · 11/12/2020 22:40

I only buy for my best friend of 43 years. I don't have a price in mind, I just buy something I know she will love. This year, it's a light up glass bottle with the image of a flapper on it. Other than that, 2 secret Santa's in work One is limit of £5, the other £20.

LizB62A · 11/12/2020 22:54

Nothing
A couple of us used to exchange gifts back when we were all single but dropped that as people married/had kids/moved away.

I think we all appreciate not doing gifts - it's one less layer of stress around Christmas

We're happy enough catching up with each other when we can - we don't need gifts to prove that we're mates Grin

LizB62A · 11/12/2020 22:56

I don't buy gifts for family either though - we used to do a Secret Santa for the adults and gifts for the children, but they're all grown up now so we just give them a little gift plus some cash and they buy what they want (and they're very happy!)

jitterbugintomybrain · 11/12/2020 22:58

Nothing, Christmas is stressful/ expensive enough without adding friends into the mix too.

alphajuliet123 · 11/12/2020 23:05

Nothing, unless I'm visiting their house and I'll take food or booze to enjoy together e.g. a nice bottle of gin or box of chocs. They do the same when they come to us.

Gah, I'm gonna miss all the get togethers this Christmas.

Bbq1 · 11/12/2020 23:36

The op asked about whether or not we buy for friends, not adults in general but I also buy for mum, dh, ds, dn, db, dsil and dh's Auntie and Uncle. Of course I buy for adults, the majority of people do.

GlomOfNit · 11/12/2020 23:39

I do get presents for three of my friends - I tend to spend up to about £15, and they likewise, but sometimes I'll make them something instead.

TheChosenTwo · 12/12/2020 00:04

Yes, we do buy for lots of adults in addition to friends! Dh and I have 2 sets of parents each - both sets of our parents remarried and we both have mums and dads and step mums and stepdads (lost FIL now but we have always bought for all adults in the family), step siblings and their families. We are all pretty close.
It would feel weird to not buy for them. I have an aunt and uncle and grown up cousins that I buy for although we don’t buy for aunts or uncles on DHs side as we very rarely see them.
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t buy for adults. Well, I say that but maybe the conversation just hasn’t come up between myself and friends Grin

Floralnomad · 12/12/2020 00:10

We only exchange gifts with one long-standing friend and his husband and usually spend about £70 , another old friend of mine I normally take out for a meal but this year we will have to obviously give that a miss .

MaudHatter · 12/12/2020 01:19

I buy for one friend and spend around £20 -£30
This year she’s getting a EB platter which was £60 ish but I got in last years sale for £25 or thereabouts .
My sister is getting a EB holly teapot also from the sale . She’s my best friend .

DramaAlpaca · 12/12/2020 01:35

I only buy for close family, so spend zero on friends.

Aliferous · 12/12/2020 01:39

My best friend and I spent about £30 on a gift for each other

Pyewhacket · 12/12/2020 01:43

This year, nothing.

daisydalrymple · 12/12/2020 02:04

I spend up to £60 on one friend, I have 3 dcs and she sends them £20 each for Christmas despite me kindly saying she doesn't need to . So I like to treat her to a luxury type gift she wouldn’t necessarily buy herself.
Between £10-£20 on another friend. She lives away from her family and we buy each other a festive treat.
£10 on one work friend in our secret Santa.
