Help, gifts for my 8 year old DD

JJDEIR · 03/12/2020 23:25

My daughter has just turnt 8 she is very hard to buy for this year toys are really collecting dust and she has not requested a single one. She said she would like me to surprise her.

She is beginning to show an interest in make up, clothes and loves kawaii and Tech 🙄 she enjoys doing crafts when we do them together.

So far i have

Klutz sew mini treats
Klutz sketchbook scented

She mentioned airpods but feel she may be a little young.

I have left her gifts last as i don't know where to begin (this is all new to me last year she was all about her LOL surprise but since april this year toys have been phased out)
Was also hoping she would ask for some bits or even show more interests in toys but it's just not happening.

What make-up do you even buy for an 8 year old :/ thank you 😁

If she likes hair perhaps a hairstyle book/manual for up dos/plaits etc and some basic tools (brush/comb/clips) to go with...Re craft - a beginners/child’s sewing machine (John Lewis used to do a little one, hopefully still do) or a starter knitting set?....what sort of tech? Would a raspberry pi/beginners coding stuff/beginners electronics kit be of interest? Make up wise at that age I think lip gloss (or just salve dressed up as a gloss!) and some nail varnish is a win win...

PurpleFrames · 03/12/2020 23:37

Does she like pusheen? They have loads of craft kits and useful bits in that range.

JJDEIR · 03/12/2020 23:41

Raspberry Pi sounds fantastic, she is very interested in stop motion animation. She spent ages using my phone on an app using legos we have. I am not very tech savvy myself, so unsure if there is anything out there based on stop motion animation

What about a switch and one game? Its expensive but if she is getting into it, you will have to bite the bullet at some stage and its easier to buy it now instead of buying a lot of other gifts she may/may not be interested in?

DC2 is a little younger and also interested in makeup. I searched Smyths but I don't like the type of makeup on sale as I think it would be bad for her skin and cheap gloss is very very sticky which combined with DC2 being unable to stop touching it once applied, has resulted in it being everywhere including doors, lightswitches, cushion covers too many times. For that reason I wouldn't recommend it at all. I also don't like the idea of putting cheap eyeshadows anywhere near her eyes.
I'd stick to nail polishes and maybe just pass on one of your old blushers and a blush brush?

Givemeabreakpls · 03/12/2020 23:56

I’ve bought my dd (similar age) one of the new Polaroid cameras - can’t remember the name but they’re about £70? She’s growing out of playing with toys and is far more interested in clothes and fashion!

Takethereigns · 04/12/2020 00:01

I was going to suggest a switch. My kids love it we have got let’s sing with microphones for our daughter this year.

We also got a fairly inexpensive digital camera for her birthday which she loves.
Other ideas
USB microscope
Lip gloss kits( can make your own)
Stuff from lush
Board games
Smiggle stuff

It gets hard when they start growing out of toys. I’m lucky there are still some toys my daughter plays with

DinosaurOfFire · 04/12/2020 00:04

What about a styling mannequin head? You can get proper hairdressing ones or the toy type, then she can practice hair and makeup without it having to be on her own skin.

TotallyObsessed4 · 04/12/2020 00:26

Can I ask why you think she is too young for AirPods, they are only earphones (Although outrageously expensive)

Make up, I would consider a brand like Claire’s (specifically designed for kids).
Art and design what about some more “grown-up” colouring pencils or Water paint pens. You can get £1 canvases from Poundland. As for tech have you consider a kid friendly tablet (one with good parental controls!) I know Amazon does a specific tablet for kids, where a lot of apps are undownloadable (such as Facebook, the normal version of YouTube, Snapchat ect). Not too expensive either only about £60.

Cluelessgift · 04/12/2020 02:26

How about the plasticine movie maker studio if she likes stop motion?

Alakazam8 · 04/12/2020 08:57

There’s a Lego make your own movie book by Klutz I’m sure she would like. I’ve just ordered it for my dd. If it’s stop motion she’s into I’d look into creating a stop motion set for her perhaps with a Raspberry PI

JJDEIR · 04/12/2020 09:20

I have heard AirPods are extremely loud, no volume control? and i wouldn't want to harm her little ears.
If i am incorrect then i would consider them as that is the only thing she has actually mentioned to me

I had a bit of a block buying for my 8yo DD a few weeks ago but now I seem to have gone completely overboard. I might hold some stuff back for her birthday. She’s got...
Kiddi Superstar DJ (karaoke-type toy as she loves to sing).
Cool Maker Go Glam Nail Salon
Fluffy jacket
Djeco scarf painting kit
Djeco DIY dream catcher
Yarn craft kit
Doug the pug soft toy
Alarm clock
Wreck this journal

From other people she’s getting
Echo dot
Wireless headphones
Hair chalks
Chronicles of Narnia books
National Geographic Weird But True book
Gemstone dig kit
Fimo
Slime kit

Baking stuff always goes down well like a cake pop or waffle maker. She got roller blades for her last birthday which have been used and loved so much.

Are the wireless earphones AirPods at all? Maybe i was being hasty on the too young for them. Just had a nosey at the cool glam nail salon ( think it is fab grown up but not adult perfect and have just ordered)

This for me is the awkward stage as i don't want her to be older than she is but also don't want to force her to play with toys if she really does not want to anymore xx

Thank you have ordered the movie maker and looking into the raspberry PI i am not tech savvy so i am unsure what is best 🤣

So far she has

Klutz sets and a cool glam nail salon. Will maybe make her a claires goody bag, but my gosh the prices for some things 😮 xx

My dd has just turned 8 too. She is starting to get into beauty. I only allow lip gloss and nail varnish. H and m and claire's are good for products aimed at children.
She is getting make up bag with clips and scrunchies, lip gloss and nail polish.
Bath bombs in stocking
Lego dots jewellery stand and necklace
Printed canvas and sharpies- prefers to colour than paint.
The planet earth book aimed at children , she loves animals.
She still believes in santa and has asked for hatchimals (which she still plays with) and a big lollipop!
For her birthday she got baking stuff which she enjoyed and one of those oversized hoodies. She also got a skateboard.
I am struggling now cause after her birthday I ran out of ideas.

ilovehalloumi · 04/12/2020 10:21

I got my DD fake AirPods for about £30 and they work fine and aren't too loud. I was worried she would lose them and the real ones are so expensive!

AliceMck · 04/12/2020 11:24

My 8yo has an amazon echo in her room, she loves listening to books on it. I’ve considered AirPods for her but she’s terrible at looking after things and I know she will loose them within a day. I’ve got her a microscope that she really wanted, got a national geographic one from Aldi for £15 last week. My 6yo has asked for a metal detector. The two of them plan on hunting for things and examining them. The Lego boost are supposed to be good. I’ve also got my 8yo a robot to build and program herself. She still likes toys though so has a rainbocorn, hatchimal, some off the hook dolls, Harry Potter lego a designafriends play set..

Think i may do this, the real deal are £124-£157 on amazon, been searching and found a set by skinnydip? May i ask the ones you have as I'd like to buy a set i know work/sound is good. I just cannot justify apple airpod prices
OP posts:
Bungle2 · 04/12/2020 17:35

My daughters are 10 and 9 and I wouldn’t opt for ear pods. They both have over the head Sony wireless headphones which seem to stand the test of time. I’d be worried they’d lose an ear pod

passthemustard · 04/12/2020 18:24

My 8yo DD is the same! She is getting:

a switch and a couple of games (I figure endless present opportunities in the future with games and accessories)
Robux
A lot of pokemon stuff
Bubble tea and a personalised bubble tea cup
A lovely little bath set with shower gel, bubble bath, lip gloss etc
Pyjamas and fluffy socks

And a baby brother 😂😂😬

mummyof2boys30 · 04/12/2020 18:58

We have got ds 10 and ds 8 the wireless sony ch510 headphones. Also amazon alexa went down well here.

TheRubyRedshoes · 04/12/2020 20:21

Alice mick.

Which robot please?

Arnt there other versions of air pod... Rather than the expensive ones?

Dejco sets are beautiful for craft.

Mines getting beanbag chair, new tooth brush, some pens... And robux.

Bungle2 · 04/12/2020 20:35

@mummyof2boys30 those are the wireless headphones that we’ve got and they’re great 👍🏻

Brill, last minute idea for their granda to get them. Think they will be a big hit. Their dad has a dearer model so hoping they will be good job
