Favourite part of the Christmas meal

Following on from another thread - what is your favourite part of the Christmas feast?
Mine is most definitely Christmas pudding. Aldi's are usually lovely, and as I'm the only one who really enjoys it, we tend to have loads left over from the extra large one I buy. I put it into little Tupperware pots in the freezer with a little cream to get out from time to time - keeps me feeling Christmassy for ages afterwards! The rest is a glorified roast dinner which I can take or leave except the pigs in blankets!

Agree - chestnut stuffing and bread sauce, never have them any other time of year - but why not? This year I am going to do a Thanksgiving feast next weekend (just for DH & I !), I am furloughed, plenty of time to do it so I will make sure I do bread sauce and a really nice stuffing. Smile

I'm amazed at the popularity of leftovers, no one wants them in our house. So we try and cook just what we'll eat and the spare turkey goes in the freezer otherwise there's a risk of waste, we all want to go back to normal food on Boxing Day.

I refuse to cook for days after Christmas dinner, so it’s leftovers or starve.
ExpensivelyDecorated · 24/11/2020 07:43

Well, everyone is quite capable of cooking here so no one will starve. Usually we go away for a few days which circumvents the leftovers issue, we won't be this year but still won't be eating leftovers for days.

Puddings/desserts

movingonup20 · 24/11/2020 07:52

Bubble and squeak on Boxing Day!

LadyCatStark · 24/11/2020 08:04

The sauces. DH thinks I’m a complete heathen for having mint jelly, apple sauce and stuffing (not a sauce but you know what I mean) for my turkey and cheese sauce on my potatoes and veg.

MadauntofA · 24/11/2020 08:10

The great thing about left overs is the "what's for dinner" cry is not heard for a few days after Christmas as the answer is invariably "go forage in the fridge"

Toss up between smoked salmon and champagne or pigs in blankets.

Honestly, add some really nice sprouts to that (last year I did them with shallots, chestnuts, and pancetta) and I don't need to bother with anything else.

MadauntofA · 24/11/2020 08:12

The one sauce I do like is bread sauce - no one else likes it, and the concept is weird, but it does round off the turkey with a little gravy mixed in.

The whole dinner - now that we have finally given up any pretence that turkey is an acceptable meat. Without it, the dinner is all much better Grin

But also, yorkshire puddings are the very best bit.

Bubble and squeak on boxing day

We re having smoked goose this year. I can’t wait.

All of it. I do enjoy turkey, possibly uniquely on this thread! I like it freshly cooked and hot on Christmas Day with gravy, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, stuffing, chipolatas, roast potatoes, Parmesan roast parsnips (Delia Smith recipe), sprouts, Chantenay carrots and petits pois. I like a plateful of all of that the next day, re-heated. I like turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce and stuffing. I like cold turkey with salad and lots of mayonnaise. I like turkey puff, made with the last bits of turkey chopped up with the last bits of ham, sauted leeks and mushrooms, any leftover gravy and cream, all mixed up, spread on the centre of a sheet of puff pastry, edges pulled to the centre, baked. Wonderful cold if there's any left over. I love soup made from stock from the turkey carcass.

I also love Christmas pudding, mince pies, Christmas cake (I make a Caribbean rum fruit cake instead of the traditional British rich fruit cake, no icing, it's glorious). We don't usually get to the cake until nearly New Year, when the mince pies run out.

Leftovers are marvellous. It's not just the convenience of having a fridge full of food that doesn't need cooking, they taste great. Some of our leftovers end up in the freezer so we have a little taste of Christmas well into the New Year.

Bring it on!

Roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. :)

VinylDetective · 24/11/2020 13:53

Bread sauce. We’re having beef this year but I’ve still ordered two tubs of bread sauce for the freezer to go with future chicken dinners.

thelegohooverer · 24/11/2020 16:24

The stuffing. The turkey is basically just the container that we cook the stuffing in.

caperplips · 24/11/2020 16:31

I LOVE turkey! Always have and it is the highlight of my Christmas menu!
I love it on the day, we eat dinner in the evening and I look forward to it all day.

I also adore turkey, stuffing and cranberry sandwich on super fresh white sliced pan with real butter and lots of salt. I have this for breakfast next morning and I'm already looking forward to it!

Gatehouse77 · 24/11/2020 16:51

Pigs in blankets and stuffing. Ideally with gravy but, obviously, still eaten without!

Labobo · 24/11/2020 16:52

Pigs in blankets. Crispy homemade stuffing balls. Bucks Fizz.

Labobo · 24/11/2020 16:53

And DH's garlicky roast potatoes.

EternalOptimist7 · 24/11/2020 16:56

Roast potatoes & honey roast parsnips plus all the turkey trimmings. And I absolutely love Christmas Night sandwiches with turkey, stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce & Hellman’s mayo. Heaven!

EternalOptimist7 · 24/11/2020 16:57

Oh yes & pigs in blankets

Mrsmadevans · 24/11/2020 17:00

The roast potatoes

NottinghamFlorest · 24/11/2020 17:08

Sprouts with chestnuts and bacon... and roast parsnips.
