Apple AirPods v AirPods Pro

Are they really superior? They're shaped differently and they have a wireless charge facility.

For those that have them, are they much better? It's a big spend for me for DD(15) and I want to get it right.

Plus JL have £20 off. Need to sort it tonight.

I have airpods Pro and definitely worth it. Has a noise cancellation feature which is not as strong as over the ear headphones but definitely helps! Really convienent. Actually I ran out of battery on mine last night, used some over the ear headphones and the difference in quality of sound compared to the airpods Pro was really noticeable. They airpods Pro are pricey but if they are well taken care off it can be worth it 😊

DominaShantotto · 22/11/2020 16:11

I've had both. The standard airpods are really uncomfortable in my ears - the airpods pro fit better (my ears always struggle with that shape of earbuds though).

Pro have noise cancellation (what I bought them for) and transparency modes, and have spatial audio which works with some stuff on Apple TV and Disney+ and is quite impressive when it does - it plays the audio based on where your head is in relation to the screen.

But if he's just wanting to play music on the bus - save the money and get the standard pods... I specifically wanted noise cancellation for video calls in a conservatory where the roof gets noisy when it's raining (and they work quite well on a husband as well)

Thanks!
Great feedback.

Does having a wireless charge mat make it better?

I have AirPods Pro and DH has the cheaper AirPods. I’m getting him the Pros for Christmas, but his existing ones have lasted him 3 years of almost constant use!

The Pros have really good noise cancelling, it’s one of the main differentiators between the two. They also come with different sized rubber buds for a secure fit.

The rubber buds are a big selling point for me as I find that normal earphones (like the standard Apple ones) tend to fall out of my ears.

What earphones does your DD currently use? If she has the standard Apple wired ones, she’d probably be fine with the standard AirPods. If she prefers proper in-ear buds, or likes to have a noise cancelling option, I’d recommend the Pros if you can stretch to it Smile

Fab! Thank you.
She has the standard lightening earphones at the moment. She borrows her sisters AirPods for running. She definitely needs her own!

I have the AirPod Pro, I've never had any other non-wired ones. I love them. I listen to lots of podcasts while doing housework or pottering around and the noise cancelling is fantastic.

We have a Belkin charging mat which charges everything - phones, AirPods, watch.

Blogdog · 22/11/2020 16:20

AirPods Pro all the way. Ive tried both and for me the wireless charging is irrelevant - it’s the superior comfort, noise cancelling and better sound that makes them worth the extra money.

LittleEsme · 22/11/2020 17:22

That's decided! Pro's it is.
I think JL has the best deal at the moment? Anyone know any differently? She looks after her things so well so I don't begrudge the expense.

Watching with interest. Do they pros stay in well and feel secure?

WhatAreWordsWorth · 22/11/2020 17:47

£199 for the Pros seems to be the best price I can find on most websites at the moment.

@bendmeoverbackwards I have funny ears and find that normal headphones tend to fall out. The Pros come with different sizes buds so they feel a lot more secure than the standard Apple earphones.

SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 22/11/2020 18:07

If anyone sees the air pods on offer please let me know, Amazon price is £125 which is their best price so far but I am hoping they go down a bit.

LittleEsme · 22/11/2020 18:54

£188.90 on OnBuy.com

Is this kosher?!

LittleEsme · 22/11/2020 18:58

And John Lewis's AirPods pro are £199 with £20 off, ends tonight I think

LittleEsme · 22/11/2020 18:59

Oh hang on, the price includes the saving. Scrap that one.

I’d go for peace of mind and get them from JL over the other one.

DominaShantotto · 22/11/2020 20:34

There's a problem with fake ones so I would go reputable in terms of supplier.

One minor cautionary note - I'm actually slightly allergic to whatever it is Apple use for the rubbery bits on the Airpods Pro and Watch straps - so had to buy memory foam replacement tips to stop my blooming ears itching - after doing that they work brilliantly (I also just use the nylon style watch bands). I've come across a few people who suffer the same!

MadDoggoLady · 04/12/2020 09:49

Can anyone explain the wireless charge facility? How do they actually charge?

BeaLola · 04/12/2020 12:11

HotSince63 can I ask how good the Belkin charging mat is ? DS who has iPhone 8 us after a wireless charging mat, Thank you

WeAllHaveWings · 04/12/2020 13:56

I bought myself the Airpods Pro as an early Christmas present from JL. Mostly for work Zoom calls.

It is great having wireless after just normal earbuds and they work well with the iphone for music and calls. Noise cancelling/transparency modes are good.

Using them with Windows 10 is disappointing. I didn't realise I couldn't listen to them in stereo and use them for a microphone too, so I have to use the laptop microphone which is not what I expected and I can't move away from the laptop and keep talking. It is something to do with bluetooth bandwidth. I can switch them to be a AG headset in windows 10 and use the inbuilt mic but then the sound quality is ridiculously poor/buzzy and distracting.

From a comfort point of view I personally find the normal airpods more comfortable to wear, I am using the smallest airpods pro rubber tips and really need to screw them in or they pop out, the bigger ones are impossible for me to get in. Maybe I have weird earholes, but the normal airpods just sat there and I would really need to shake my head to dislodge them.

I tried to get ds to swap me his airpods with the airpod pros and told him they are better sound/have noise cancelling etc but he refused as he says they don't look as good - the long slim stem of the airpods are cooler 😎 🙄

Wireless charging is a feature they have but I am not spending more buying a charging pad just to save me 2 secs putting a cable in.
