Magnatiles/Playmags for ages 10 and 8?

I've ordered a box of Playmags (150 pieces) for my children who are 10 and 8. I wasn't sure if they'd be too old but after doing a bit of research it seemed like it would be fine. They still play together a LOT, mostly with Lego or Sylvanian Families, but they've got enough of those to sink a ship.

Now that the Playmags have arrived I'm having a bit of a wibble. Do your slightly older children (still) enjoy them?

My 5 and 2.5 year olds love them. Although I really can’t imagine them still being interested in 5 years.

My 13yo will still have a sneaky play if any are left lying around (as do I!)

My class (9 and 10 year olds) absolutely love them.

We have them and my 5yr old plays with them regularly. Her 8 and 10yr old brothers haven’t touched them in a few years I’m afraid

My children have played with them lots age 3-8. 9+ they would join in but probably wouldn't choose to play much on their own.

They are pretty good for teaching maths (fraction, shapes, rotations etc) if we have another proper lockdown.....

My 9 year old still plays with them. I think you need quite a big set for this age group though.

Well the results are in: they absolutely love them! It took a bit of practice and frustration, but then they spent the afternoon building houses for their other toys. It's developed into a massive living complex for the Maileg mice.

I don't know how long the 10yo will still be interested but at least for the 8yo I can see them being something that gets quite a bit of use.

Can I ask if magnatiles and Playmags are compatible?

Following with interest, does anyone know what the best brand is to go for on Amazon? Thinking of getting some for my 3 year old (they’ll definitely appeal to her big sister too!)

LightOfAThousandStars · 10/12/2020 11:23

We have the Children's Hub ones off Amazon, the 100 piece set is great and played by both my 3 year old and 8 year old. Don't think they are too old at all.
