What do your kids listen to music on?

Dd is nearly 9 and she enjoys listening to music on YouTube in the living room. Would like to get her something she can use in her bedroom for christmas. She has an ipad but has a daily time allowance and I don't really want to extend it for music so please help me out what do other people use? Didnt know if an Alexa is child friendly or if I want one in my house Hmm

Alexa dot over here. Younger than yours.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/11/2020 15:45

Simple digital radios in bedrooms. AEcho Dot downstairs. We mainly use it as a radio and timer.

cliffdiver · 17/11/2020 15:46

DDs7 and 9 each have an Alexa in their room.

Linked to the Spotify and Amazon Music accounts with explicit filters.

AlexaShutUp · 17/11/2020 15:48

DD is older (teenager) but generally listens on her Alexa or on her phone with ear pods. We have an Amazon music subscription.

Atalune · 17/11/2020 15:50

Google Play. Linked to our Spotify account, they love it. They can shout at it to play whatever and ask it questions like the google search engine.

MeringueCloud · 17/11/2020 15:52

Stereo with bluetooth (can link it to my ipad). Useful if you have CDs (!) they want to listen to as well

SpaceOp · 17/11/2020 15:54

Yup, Alexa here. Dots in both kids' rooms.

One tip though which I wish I'd known in advance - if you have Alexa it's easier if you use Amazon music. If you have Spotify, I think Google Home is easier. We have had spotify for years, but when we got the Alexas, if they're all inked to same Amazon account, you can only use one Spotify account at a time. I suspect this will change eventually, but it meant we had to create separate amazon accounts for each child. Which is fine but mildly irritating. If I'd realised in advance, I think I'd have gone with Google Home.

Idratherbeasleep · 17/11/2020 15:55

I thought I was going to get a battering for even considering and Alexa but I'm pleasantly surprised. Not sure a digital radio would please her as she likes to chose her songs, will look into the dot didn't realise you could sync to Spotify thats handy! Q

Never heard of Google home, I'm going to look into that too! Love how helpful mumsnet is

Last year they were giving away google plays with other larger purchases, so maybe see what Black Friday deals there are?

I think they are very very similar to an Alexa, I just didn’t want to give Amazon any more money!

Idratherbeasleep · 17/11/2020 16:23

I will plan to wait until black Friday, also consciously trying not to buy anything from amazon unless 100% necessary!

Mine has a Bluetooth speaker and a cheap locked down phone

JessicaJoans · 17/11/2020 18:27

Got my daughter an echo dot for her 9th birthday. She uses it daily to play music (using Amazon music). I paid £25 and it has been well worth the money. It will also spell words for her when she’s writing stories (and fart/meow on demand).

Mustbethewine · 17/11/2020 18:40

Alexa, Google home, YouTube on their TV, phones and tablet (they're both signed into my account so I know exactly what they're watching/listening too) my DC are 8 and 9

grafittiartist · 17/11/2020 18:49

14 year old - vinyl and cd's!
She says that it's really different to Spotify- as she does a whole album at a time. Enjoys it.

Pipandmum · 17/11/2020 18:50

Spotify on phone

Butternutsqoosh · 17/11/2020 18:52

Got my 9 year old an echo dot last year, 15 year old wants one this year

JinglesWish · 17/11/2020 19:14

Alexa dot. We’ve got a Google Home too, but it doesn’t listen as well as Alexa

snowgirl1 · 17/11/2020 19:55

Echo dot for 8 year old DD.

reefedsail · 17/11/2020 20:01

Dot in 10yo's bedroom.

He has Apple Music and we have Audible. It will play him his music and his books (and also tell him what I've ordered him form Amazon for Chritmas).

ilovebagpuss · 17/11/2020 20:02

When mine were younger we bought them little MP3 players and loaded those with their favourites. Now it’s Alexa or a phone as older than your DD.
They are both music mad and have extensive playlists on Spotify which is handy for parties or Christmas or whatever you just ask Alexa play x playlist or whatever.

poppinpink · 18/11/2020 06:33

We've got Alexa here too, each of the kids have one and they pick whatever music they want. I picked a dot up for £18.99 a few weeks ago.

TammyTwoSawnson · 18/11/2020 06:46

We have Google homes here, and they link up with Spotify and the kids can ask for whatever music they like. Ds1 also uses his Google with headphones

Idratherbeasleep · 18/11/2020 10:15

Thanks for all the helpful replies, going to wait for black Friday and hope for a deal!
