Games for a chess enthusiast

Can any recommend a game that would suit a chess enthusiast (but not an expert!). Friend's son, 15, not ridiculously expensive. Thanks.

Tatsu or possibly Hive

Duke is an excellent game with a lot in common with chess but is expensive.

Possibly tafl/hnefatafl might work too.
