In the past we have had a takeaway and will probably do that again this year, probably Indian as DH isn't a big fan of pizza and I find Chinese too salty.

What do you think you will have? 🤔

We always have Jamie Oliver's smoked trout pate with Yorkshire puddings and prosecco.

poshme · 16/11/2020 07:50

Hmm.

Might change to baked Camembert.

MarmaladeTeepee · 16/11/2020 07:51

I'm going to slow cook the ham on Christmas Eve so that and then various frozen party platter type bits - love a buffet 😋

BabyMoonPie · 16/11/2020 08:01

Turkey fajitas! Not sure how or when the tradition started but it's our traditional Christmas Eve tea

inappropriateraspberry · 16/11/2020 08:02

I've got some Xmas pasta in the cupboard - probably do that. 2 little ones here, so not bothering with anything fancy that they won't eat 😬😆

HerbErtlinger · 16/11/2020 08:04

I always make a lasagne on the 23rd to reheat on Xmas eve. Reheated lasagne is the best

Pepperwand · 16/11/2020 08:06

Usually we go for a pub lunch on Christmas Eve... about 15 of us with cousins, aunts and uncles etc but that won't happen this year so we're going to treat ourselves at home to lobster, scallops, fries and aioli with a glass of champagne!

Pascha · 16/11/2020 08:07

Carpet picnic as usual. Everybody picks the week before and I order it from tesco then we pile everything up on a rug in the living room and help ourselves.

Nothing involving hard cooking, all just oven heated or cold.

actiongirl1978 · 16/11/2020 08:09

Marks and Spencer party food and blinis, with crisps and quality st.

I don't drink on Christmas eve as it leaves me too tired to enjoy Christmas day.

We eat all this whilst watching Arthur Christmas for the 9th time this year ( we took DD to see it at the cinema and she was 3 and is now 12).

userxx · 16/11/2020 08:32

should have known that there would be some competitive undereating at christmas dinner posts on mumsnet.

I will have half a roast potato and a quarter of a sprout..... will probably need to lie down for half an hour due to bloating.

Worldwide2 · 16/11/2020 08:34

My DH is from another country and celebrates the 24th as Xmas day. So we will be having the traditional dinner from there on Xmas eve.

MsMiaWallace · 16/11/2020 08:34

We're having slow cooked ham in nice baked rolls, cheeses, crackers etc then we have hotel chocolat dipping set for later! With champagne of course!

Worldwide2 · 16/11/2020 08:35

Before that is was party food from M&S

spagbog5 · 16/11/2020 08:38

We are having a fish platter ( smoked salmon, trout, fish pates ,mackerel etc) crusty bread and lashings of champagne!
No small children anymore ( 15,21,23 ) so we will chill and enjoy !

WattleOn · 16/11/2020 08:42

DH and I have blended UK/European and Australian customs at Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, I cook a turkey with most of the trimmings (roast potatoes, veggies including Brussels sprouts, gravy).

On Christmas Day, we have a running buffet of seafood, mostly stuff that DH can bbq.

funtimefrank · 16/11/2020 08:43

I've lost quite a few close family members over the last few years, the last straw being my lovely daddy last year. It's only my dh, 2 kids and my mum for Christmas now as any other family is miles away. At least dm is in our bubble.

This means we are reinventing our Christmas food - my girls and husband don't like 'feasting' really. We tried to kick this off last year but everyone had an awful fluey feverish bug that went to their chests Hmm.

So this year Xmas eve is going to be our 'big' meal - pork and the smallest turkey crown I can find, pigs in blankets, roasties, veg inc red cabbage, a veggie pie for me, pigs in blankets, stuffing and let's face it yorkies. Ginger cake/Yule log for pud.

Christmas Day is a running buffet kind of thing. And baked potatoes for Dd2, dh and dm the massive oddballs.

Boxing Day is going to be Italian stuff apparently.

stargirl1701 · 16/11/2020 08:44

We usually have a picnic under the tree.

Wherearefoxssocks · 16/11/2020 08:47

I usually have ham and chips with salad and nice chutney at my DM's house. This year since we won't be there I think we're going to have crispy duck with pancakes and some party nibbles.

AdventCaroline · 16/11/2020 09:05

I'll be working on Christmas Eve, so DC are in charge, they are big enough not to need DH's help either this year - we'll have cheeses, pate, salami, quiche, focaccia, sausage rolls, olives etc when I get back, followed by Christmas cake and whatever DC have baked during the afternoon (closely guarded secret, it has to be kept as a surprise for me - we have had iced Christmas biscuits and mince pies in the past).
Dc spend hours making menus and place cards and table decorations.

GameSetMatch · 16/11/2020 09:17

We have a big buffet lunch on Christmas Eve, we then go to the pub and when we get home we just finish what’s left of the buffet.

movingonup20 · 16/11/2020 09:18

Depends on where we are, who we are with! So up in the air this year

EternalOptimist7 · 16/11/2020 09:22

Some years we have Maccie D’s. Haven’t really thought much about it to be honest. DD is super fussy so very rarely eats what we eat.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/11/2020 09:24

I love a hot pork baguette with stuffing, apple sauce and coleslaw on Christmas Eve - easy, tasty, and fits around DH's usual Christmas Eve activity and the adult children going to the pub with their mates.
Obviously this year will be different, we could still go with the pork but now that someone's mentioned going for a curry.....

PerditaNitt · 16/11/2020 09:26

M&S party food, a cheeseboard and some crudités. That said, I like the sound of going out for dinner on the 24th, sounds like a lovely idea!

TrickyD · 16/11/2020 09:30

DH organises the Christmas Eve Alpine supper. Normally there are about 10 of us, who knows this year?

So cheese fondue for veggies; pierrade where meat is cooked on the hot stone, plus raclette - ittle shovels with potatoes ham etc and raclette cheese top grilled until brown. Salad, cornichons, pearl onions etc.

The way in which travel possibilities are going, this is likely to be the closest we get to the real Alps this winter.
