Not massive but something they plugs in and he can link his phone and listen to music on? I have seen a couple on amazon but mixed reviews? Ideally under £50?

I'd just get an Echo Dot, they are usually £20 on Black Friday. Then he can link to his Spotify / Apple Music / Amazon and play music directly from it

Thanks meg. What is the sound quality like? Aren’t they like Alexa that listens into your conversations??

I have one of the Anker Soundcore speakers. They're excellent. There are a variety of models all with great reviews

MegBusset · 15/11/2020 08:55

Sound quality is really good for a small speaker. Yes it 'listens' but doesn't record or do anything unless prompted. Can also play 20 questions, tell you the news, act as an alarm, tell you a bedtime story, make fart noises... My kids love theirs.

I bought this one recently and have been really impressed with it. Looks like there is a slightly cheaper version too.

The Sony SRS-XB01 is brilliant - really small but excellent sound quality. Got one about a year ago after it got a Best Buy rating in Which, it's great.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 15/11/2020 10:31

I never know what reviews to listen to, that Sony has some great but some bad reviews on amazon...

What is the different between and echo dot and an Alexa? Blush the Alexa definitely listens and records.... Meg you say the echo listens but does not record?

We have the JBL Go 2 portable speaker which is very small, handy when she goes to her friends as she takes it with her.
Also have the Wonderboom which is bigger in size and a little better in quality. Wonderboom we bought in John Lewis but cheaper on Amazon at the moment.

I've just bought this Sony speaker for my bathroom.

It's waterproof, easy to connect, good sound quality, fantastic battery life and comes in loads of colours!

PS I don't work for Sony, promise! Grin

UE Boom is on offer on amazon, we’ve got a few of them. They just charge up and the battery lasts ages so you can move them around or take them out with you. You can also pair them up. Very robust and waterproof.

Sorry to jump in but I have a soundcore mini that I love but my sons kindle fire 7 won't connect to it despite many tries. Is there another speaker that would work for him for his room?

DD (age 12) was given this one for her birthday and DH keeps nicking it because the sound is so good! Really happy with it.

I have an Anker Soundcore. It's fantastic sound quality and an excellent battery life. I've had it for two years and it's still just as good now as the day I got it.

Cantthinkofausename · 15/11/2020 16:53

Ive bought both my ds (13&15) the echo dot and battery bases for their christmas.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 15/11/2020 17:05

@Cantthinkofausename are you able to answer my question about wether the dot listens a bad records like Alexa?

MintyCedric · 15/11/2020 18:13

@Wigeon I was really impressed.

Am actually a bit gutted that I've got a full house of Echo dots as I'd like to get them in all the funky colours for different rooms!

Sadik · 15/11/2020 18:15

Minirig speakers were recommended to me by a friend who does sound for gigs, I'm very pleased with the sound quality. They're from a Bristol based company & made in the UK too which I liked.

And yes, Echo dot will listen I believe.

SummerOfComedy · 15/11/2020 18:20

I wanted a new clock radio for the bedroom and bought an echo dot with clock.
I love it. Sounds great, plays radio and music from my phone. Easy to set up, no fiddly buttons. (I could never get the hang of the digital radio I had!)
Takes up little space on the dressing table. Great!

ageingdisgracefully · 15/11/2020 18:23

I've got a Sony SRS. Brilliant little thing.

Carrie76 · 15/11/2020 18:56

Another vote for the Sony one, I was given it for my birthday and it’s fab

The echo, dot, show, spot are all different devices that use alexa and all record, but only after you use the wake word and only what you say after, such as play capital radio etc. You can tell when it is awake with a visual and audible signal. You can also set when recordings are deleted.

What do you think it is going to record when you wake alexa that is of concern?

WeAllHaveWings · 15/11/2020 22:07

That was meant to be a reply to ops last post. Twice that's happened to me today 🤔

jamaisjedors · 15/11/2020 22:09

Love the Anker soundcore too

Tryingtokeepsafe · 17/11/2020 12:57

Didn’t know anker do these I’ll have a google. I like their charging cables!

@WeAllHaveWings I have reasons for not wanting a recording device that is linked to amazon but I can’t put it on here. Sadly I don’t work for the secret service or anything exciting but that is how it has to be in my home with dc.
