12 day advent calendars...

When would you open them?
I know the 12 days of Christmas traditionally starts on Xmas day so don’t want to do that.
If I start on the 1st, it’s finished quite early (might have to get another!)
Have an early Dec birthday so considered starting after that, but it is a bit random date-wise.
The kids have 24 day calendars, this is a nice one for me, no one else is impacted by what I decide!

What are you planning on doing?

I'd do every other day from the 1st I think.

DH is going every other day on his whisky one (which isn't actually an advent calendar, just a 12 miniature selection box which was the fraction of the cost)

I bought a 12 day calendar with full size make up items from Superdrug. It is for DS2's GF and as she will receive it Christmas Day, it seemed more sensible than an advent calendar.

I quite like the idea of extending the Christmas joy by having a little treat on the days after, so I’d have started on Christmas Eve, but I’m one of those people who leave the tree up until the Epiphany. It probably works better to do it alongside the dc. Maybe start on Sunday 13th so the 12th one is Christmas Eve?

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/11/2020 07:21

I don’t understand why these are marketed as advent calendars. The 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas Day to Twelfth Night.

AuntieStella · 13/11/2020 07:24

Advent is 24 days (unless you are very religious and count it from Advent Sunday not 1Dec)

12 days is the traditional length of the Christmas Feast, so I'd use a 12 Days of Christmas set to open on the actual 12 Days of Christmas

As you can tell, I'm not into the cutting celebrations short malarkey!

Thehollyandtheirony · 13/11/2020 09:10

I think I would start it on the 6th (with St Nic!) and then when it ends you only have a week until Christmas Eve.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/11/2020 09:19

An advent calendar with only 12 doors seems a bit of a con to me.

But if your birthday is in early December, I'd probably open one then and just do them on and off throughout the rest of December. If you're anything like me, you'll probably get bored of it after a few days anyway.

I had a gin advent calendar one year and opened the first few but then left it and just took them all out in one go on Christmas Eve. Now I'd rather just spend the money on a couple of nice full sized bottles of gin rather than a load of minatures including a few weird flavours and liqueur ones that I don't really like.

@ShaunaTheSheep Advent is the lead-up to Christmas. The twelve days are the days of the Christmas festival itself.

Shouldn't they be postvent calendars?Grin

I would do one every other day. I quite like the idea actually. Last year, for the first time, I bought myself a beauty advent calendar and I felt quite overwhelmed by there being something every day. Every other day gives you time to anticipate and appreciate.

Er, yes. That's what I said HmmSmile

Chickenitalia · 13/11/2020 16:07

I quite like the idea of every other day, might go with that on odd number days as my birthday is an even day and for once I actually have gifts to open for birthday and Christmas! Then after Christmas is so busy with work and children... I just wanted something that’s all mine this year. I’ve never had a treat advent calendar and wanted something I would really use and love, this one was exactly my sort of thing where beauty or alcohol ones aren’t. Normally I would agree that 12 day advents is a con but it’s not been marketed that way for this particular one. Just 12 little gifts to spread out I suppose.

Anyway thank you, that’s helped me decide!

I agree 100% @ShaunaTheSheep

DD likes to have a 12 day calendar in her stocking. She often delays opening it until 1st of Jan because it cheers up the back to work/study gloom.

@ShaunaTheSheep oops, misread your comment!
