Do you or your children choose the Xmas tree decs?

OP posts:

We have the same ones every year - added to when we see a nice one from a day out or holiday.

Some of my decorations are over 70 years old - from my grandparents’ house.

thelegohooverer · 12/11/2020 13:55

Both. I like to have something on the tree to represent something about each of the dc that particular year. Sometimes they choose a new bauble that does that (ds was obsessed with penguins one year so that was easy), sometimes I buy something alongside what they choose that just strikes me as apt, or occasionally, I’ve made the baubles myself. We buy them in different places we visit as well. There’s some kind of story for everything that’s on the tree.

MrsWooster · 12/11/2020 13:57

They choose from the vast box of ancient tat treasures and decorate the tree (then I correct it after they’ve gone to bed)

DieCryHate · 12/11/2020 14:00

I choose the ones on the main tree but decorate with his help. He does what he likes to the other tree in the dining room. It's just a fake Tesco job, I don't buy two ten footers each year or anything!

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/11/2020 14:00

We have more than one tree, I have a lovely stylish one, visible in the front bay window and the kids have full creativity on the other, in the back window. Balance! Grin

Anoisagusaris · 12/11/2020 14:01

What do you mean? We have decorations, added up over the years, and they go on the tree.

Lexilooo · 12/11/2020 14:17

Surely they just put up what you have?

DinosaurOfFire · 12/11/2020 14:19

Like a pp, we put up the ones we've collected over the years- some were my grandparents, and every year we add a new one to the tree.

TheCrow · 12/11/2020 14:19

I buy all the decorations, I've been buying a few every year for about the past 15 years so way before DD was born and I always use the same ones every year. They're all pink girly things like unicorns and doughnuts and sweeties anyway so I'm pretty sure they're the things that she would pick if given the choice!

reluctantbrit · 12/11/2020 14:46

We have two large boxes with stuff which goes on the tree each year.

If something breaks it is replaced but that’s normally your bog-standard bauble. We got into the habit of buying ornaments on holiday and there it depends, some are chosen by DD, some by me, some by DH. It’s a family tree so we all have a say.

DD has a tiny tree in her room and she chose and bought most of the decorations herself. Not my style but not my tree,

wendz86 · 12/11/2020 14:47

Both . The kids choose a new decoration each year so these all go up each year alongside basic ornaments etc .

LadyCatStark · 12/11/2020 15:16

We do, DS has our first Christmas tree from our first home in his bedroom and he can decorate that how he likes!

AliceMcK · 12/11/2020 22:00

Nup, they have their own to decorate, mine is mine 😆

katienana · 12/11/2020 22:04

I have 2 trees, 1 in the playroom which has home made stuff and tinsel on it and I let the kids have fun decorating. The other in the lounge I have nice stuff on and they still help but I'll be a bit more picky about the placement! I'm thinking this year I'll get everything down from the loft last Friday of Nov and get trees assembled and lights on, then on Saturday we can do the decorating with the boring bit finished.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 12/11/2020 22:04

My solution to the children wanting to decorate problem, was to buy them their own trees. My eyes aren’t offended as they keep them in their rooms.

Beecham · 12/11/2020 22:05

Don't you use the same ones each year? It wouldn't be Christmas without getting out the decorations box! So many memories tied up! That said I do get each DC to pick 1 new decoration each year.

TheChosenTwo · 13/11/2020 00:13

We just use the same ones year after year with the odd addition of we see one we like.
They decorate it themselves, I don’t move anything, I’m too lazy and I love their interpretations Grin
My mum always used to wait until we went to bed to decorate the tree and I always felt like I missed out so I let them have total free reign. Doesn’t bother me, we pick a tree together, dh saws it to the right height, I put the lights on, dc throw the decs on. I love the charm of it!

Titsywoo · 13/11/2020 00:17

We add new ones each year (baubles mainly) but they have to be in the red/green/gold colour scheme - we all choose one each. It's a big tree and I'd happily cover every branch in baubles eventually!

IrmaFayLear · 13/11/2020 10:29

One of the first things I'd save in a fire is my baubles box. Actually that's two bauble boxes. So many memories from down the years. They are not all beautiful vintage baubles; some are homemade efforts or naff ones.

I was Shock when an old boyfriend saw my family decorating the tree - all hands on deck - and said that his dm would never allow him or his siblings to do the tree as she had her "style".

Incidentally, I find it funny when Americans say they "trim" the tree. Puts me in mind of getting out a pair of secateurs and doing a bit of topiary.

SpamIAm · 13/11/2020 13:46

I bought a load of baubles (nothing exciting) when we first moved in together. There've been a few random ones added over the years, mostly gifts, and now the kids choose one each every year (although we skipped last year for DS since he was 10 days old - he's already chosen his for this year by grabbing it out of my hand in Tesco and shoving it in his mouth 🙈).

SpamIAm · 13/11/2020 13:48

@IrmaFayLear My DH had never decorated a tree until he did it with me, his mum never let him apparently. He had no idea what he was doing - tried to put baubles on before the lights, and the star on top just midway through decorating.

IrmaFayLear · 13/11/2020 17:51

@SpamIAm - ah, these Christmas tree amateurs!!
