Christmas food must haves

ifiwasascent · 09/11/2020 09:38

I'm hopefully booking my tesco delivery slot on Friday! I've never hosted Christmas before so I'm abit scared that I'm going to forget something vital and ruin Christmas. What are your Christmas food must haves? I've ordered a turkey and ham from Mns and also some oysters for something different. Thanks!

My must have is flavoured creams to serve with dessert.
Brandy cream with warmed mince pies and Christmas pudding.
Vanilla cream with Yule tide choc log.
My DC don’t like cream so I get ice cream in for them.

VictoriaClaire28 · 09/11/2020 12:52

Pigs in blankets of course!

And croissants for breakfast - not sure if it's just us that do that?!

ShortSilence · 09/11/2020 13:17

Smoked salmon in some form.

Really good chocolates and overpriced salted nuts. I have a weakness for those tins of macadamia nuts you get at M&S. Also the extra-large cashews.

Beautiful soft French dried prunes, because everyone will be constipated.

Lots of mince pies
After dinner mints (after eights preferably)
Box of special chocolates (I get M&S Swiss)
Ingredients for a sherry trifle.
Ready made pastry (you might make a pie with leftovers).

Raindropsonrosesand · 09/11/2020 15:25

I always forget:

  • disposable large baking tray to cook the turkey in (unless you have a huge one)
  • tin foil (ideally wide one, to cover the huge turkey)
  • Matches if you plan to light the Xmas pudding
  • Christmas crackers (get these in plenty of time, since the shops run out close to the day)
-grapes and cheese crackers to go with the Stilton (I don't think Stilton needs either, but others prefer it...)
  • big box of chocolates
  • drinks to suit whoever you are hosting for

All the rest tends to fall into place Smile

goose1964 · 09/11/2020 17:06

Our Christmas normally starts with a weekend visit to see the Mancs and go to the Christmas market .DH always over estimates what we'll eat and gets dozens of cheeses, cured meats etc but I can't eat them as I have a poorly digestive system.😥. For the actual days we'll need smoked salmon, prawns, chipolatas, bacon, stuffing, cranberries, ingredients for pudding, butter ,marzipan for the stollen. Apart from those we need twiglets, crisps and other snacky things like cheesy footballs We don't eat much sweet stuff but we already bought some posh chocolates and mint ones, there's also a tub of celebrations for DGS if he comes to see us before or after.

PaulineScrambledPhones · 09/11/2020 17:06

Chutney and pickled onions for with the cheese.

marly11 · 09/11/2020 17:50

The things I always forget and have to rush out at the last minute:
Cranberries for cranberry sauce
Double cream
One of those turkey bags that I think work well to cook it in.

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 09/11/2020 17:58

Pickled onions for the cheese
I actually like gherkins to go in a sandwich with cold roast turkey
Sausage rolls, or the ingredients to make them
Chutneys
Fresh salad stuff, fruit etc - you'll probably want it to offset all the rich food
Nice things to drink, not just alcoholic. Fruit juice, good fizzy drinks & mixers etc

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 09/11/2020 18:01

Dark Chocolate Griottes from Fortnum and Mason

myhobbyisouting · 09/11/2020 18:15

Sausage meat and ALL the cheese
