@LittleMissLockdown that's a very good point. They are big boxes with loads of bits and pieces in (before the time when sets were as much of a thing). It is to be a future Christmas gift for the dc and hopefully will save a fortune.
That's a fantastic gift. As they get older you could add some power functions, motors, lights etc and they'll be able to make their own creations that move. As great as the sets are having a huge box of bricks and parts is much more fun for a Lego fan, as it means endless creations and leads to hours of creativity and problem solving.

@Metallicalover

Can I ask you OP, have you just put this post up to brag?? I haven't read the full thread but read your comments and said you have spent 3k on your child's presents!! There's a hell of a lot of people struggling especially this year with loosing jobs etc! Me and my husband haven't lost our jobs but we don't even spend £600 on presents for everyone! It's totally up to you what you spend of course but plastering it on Mumsnet etc is poor taste
This is sort of my issue with this thread, at first I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt as it's been an incredibly tough year and obviously OP has worked hard for her money and savings and she's entitled to spend whatever she wants on her children but to come to an online forum, ask if spending 3k in the middle of a pandemic is enough just seems tone deaf, she asked for people's opinions and if they aren't in agreement with her she calls them "Karen" or a "moron" or accuses them of not having as much money as she does - OP has justified this by saying she's seen loads of threads do the same but I've had a nosy at the Christmas section and I genuinely can't see any like this - I really don't understand the point of this thread at all, I'm sure plenty of people spend upwards of £1000 on their dc but most don't need to post it to mumsnet. Saying that I truly hope your children have a lovely Christmas, maybe it's in your best interest to stop replying to comments as you're just going to generate more. The answer to your question is yes it seems like it's enough, if you're genuinely worried it's not then spend more until you're satisfied it's enough.

I'd don't even think they've put it up to brag. People who spend that sort of money have no need to brag and are genuinely much more sensitive to other people. I think the poster jointed MN to deliberately wind people up.
StickTheKettleOnAlice · 09/11/2020 09:01

Oops I took ops op to mean is it too much as she said she thought she was spoiling them?

bumblebumblebumblebee · 09/11/2020 09:06

I think any threads like this.....

Have I brought enough

Am I spoiling them

Is 3k enough

Do I need to spoil my kids because of covid

Should be deleted as it just causes conflict and there really is no need for them.

I'd like to see more threads like......

I'm trying to be frugal/best ideas on a budget

Best local buys

Teaching my kids to be appreciative

Etc

Lovemusic33 · 09/11/2020 09:06

People assuming OP’s dc would be happier with a bog of generic Lego are obviously not a parent to a extreme Lego builder child 🤣. My dd has ASD and loves following the logo instructions and can build one of the large Lego sets in a hour, she will then break it up and rebuild it a few times and then it’s displayed. Neither of my kids like building random things.

FilthyforFirth · 09/11/2020 09:08

Also came on to question someone being a communications manager with such an, um, interesting, writing style.

Sigh. The Christmas board is usually such a lovely, kind place but there have been a few awful threads lately.

Yes, it is excessive, yes you are bragging, no most people dont care how much others spend on their children.

laudemio · 09/11/2020 09:10

Ah no reply from OP

I know a lot of Lego fans, young and old and the vast majority enjoy making their own creations a lot more than building official Lego sets. There's something very rewarding about creating something yourself and designing something that no one else has. Of course there will be those like your daughter who only enjoy breaking apart the same set to rebuild, but most builders I know will harvest the set for parts to create their own designs and creations.

LizB62A · 09/11/2020 09:16

If you can afford it, that's fine
It's a lot though - I'd consider it to be too much

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 09/11/2020 09:20

^I completely agree with this, my sibling used to love being creative and making replicas of props from a famous television series among other things. I think instructions telling him what to build would have gone out the window tbh and been too restrictive. There is no limit to the imagination...hope this is not something that is becoming lost today.

Equimum · 09/11/2020 09:24

Plenty, and probably too much, but obviously, that depends on your circumstances and what they are accustomed to.

My nearly 8 year old loves Lego and many of the toys on your lists, but even with all the family presents, he’ll have far less. In total, I would imagine my son will have about £250 spent in him by everyone combined. He will have plenty under the Christmas tree and a bulging stocking of quality gifts, and we will still sigh that there is too much! But that’s just us, and it is difficult to compare.

I get what you are saying, I get major hang ups every year on the "have I bought enough" theme. Blush I'm just never sure how much is enough. Yet my kids have more than they know what to do with. But I still want the magic of a big pile on Christmas morning. My ILs who also give generously but want to deliver theirs themselves later in the day so doesn't add to the Christmas morning magic.
Ywosdwos · 09/11/2020 09:28

@laudemio yes, why

HairyToity · 09/11/2020 09:31

My two sisters in law have lists as long as yours. The kids are still lovely, I don't think they are ruined.

I personally take a different approach as I don't like landfill, or plastic waste.

It's been a terrible year for many people, I shouldn't worry.

Ywosdwos · 09/11/2020 09:35

@HairyToity thank you. I really wasn't intending to be mean.. however with insults like the ones I have recieved its hard to stay quiet and not retaliate. The only reason I mentioned £3k was because someone asked. I didn't volunteer that info up front.

I have to agree with this^^

It’s all relative, some may say it’s way too much or others that it’s nowhere near enough, if they’re minted! Grin
But the difference is people spending thousands on their children probably don’t post and ask if they’ve spent too much. Hmm Come on OP you know it’s more than most people have surely.

HappydaysArehere · 09/11/2020 09:37

No books? Lego is good but no books ........!

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 09/11/2020 09:39

Happy I think op said upthread they have books aswell?

Audreyseyebrows · 09/11/2020 09:48

This is what I love about Christmas! It’s like a hallmark movie.
Merry Christmas op.

SistemaAddict · 09/11/2020 10:12

I hope Father Christmas brings OP some humility, values, and a better vocabulary for Christmas.

ChristmasSlayRide · 09/11/2020 10:12

Can we dump this trash in AIBU...

Kids Xmas, is it enough
laudemio · 09/11/2020 10:13

So long as it is enough your kids won't be supporting you in your old age then crack on with the presents.
You need a pot of about £300k for a very bog standard retirement.
Also consider JISAs, junior sipps, house deposits and uni fees. They will give your kids independence and freedom to choose.

user686827 · 09/11/2020 10:29

I think it's a ridiculously excessive amount. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Do you care about the environmental impact? It's an awful lot of plastic, and the 7 year olds list will all end in landfill.

Ywosdwos · 09/11/2020 10:32

@laudemio I dont see how this is relevant to me buying more than I normally would this year for Xmas
You guys are all acting like this is a regular every year thing. Like I said because we didn't go on holiday this year, the holiday money plus the normal Xmas fund went on Xmas and the kids know this so won't be expecting this each year... we had a blow out this year and what.. because of this i should now think of my pension and uni and all the other things u have listed ... jeepers.
