DD is currently obsessed with makeup. She always asks for her own nail varnish, makeup and perfume. I worry about her skin so try to avoid it but it is on her xmas list. I ahve just seen this.

Would you get it for a 5 year old?

I probably wouldn’t get that one but I did get my two a little make up set at that age and they loved it, I remember loving mine when I was little too, loved having bright orange eyelids!

@Qwertywerty3

Absolutely not. She’s five years old! I can’t get my head around how sexualised our young girls are becoming. It’s really worrying. What next? Waxing her legs for her 6th birthday?
What is sexualised about perfume?
Yupimahelecopter · 07/11/2020 19:40

Oh my goodness! Some people are so ott.. My 3 year old loves playing dress up, she got barbie purfume for her birthday, it smells like toliet cleaner and yes she sprays way to much but it's not sexulising her! She also has her own make up table and she looks like a bloody clown when she does it.. Its fun at home nothing else! Go for a kids purfume.. Or even a purfume making set that's basically water

What on fucking earth are you on about ???? Are you okay? Actually writing something as stupid as that! What little girl isnt into make up and what not! Hardly sexulising is it!!!! Jesus christ.

Just get it, OP Smile

I give my daughter a spritz of my perfume sometimes if she’s around when I’m doing it and asks for some. I use fairly subtle perfumes though. She’s been given some children’s perfumes which she doesn’t really use but when her friends come round they spray so much on themselves and around the whole room! I think a fruity type body spray would be much better and gentler the proper grown up perfume. Those Ghost perfumes are quite strong smelling.

Painsnail · 07/11/2020 19:50

Hmm, I think at 5 I would be telling her that perfume is something for when she's older.

How about getting an atomiser, as a pretend perfume? Or she could make her own perfumes and potions up and fill it with those. I used to love making concoctions as a kid (not sure my mum loved losing her bath products to it though)

Ohdoleavemealone · 07/11/2020 19:51

Thanks Ladies. I have had a look on claires and will get her one the mists on their instead. They have 40% off at the moment so will get a few other stocking fillers too.

Its a small perfume people saying buy a kids one why whats the difference perfume is perfume I would get it for my dd also 5 she loves all bits like this she knows to use it sensible or lose it.

Covidcovidcovid · 07/11/2020 19:51

Let her have it, but sprayed onto clothes not skin

Ohdoleavemealone · 07/11/2020 19:52

The mists on there instead! Mortified!

You can get rosewater in a little spray if you want something very pure and skin-friendly

Tootsietoot · 07/11/2020 19:58

I wouldn't because there is a link between perfume and scents and asthma. They are exposed to enough pollution in the home as it is.

LucyCharlotteP · 07/11/2020 20:01

My dd is 4 and also likes make up my older dd was the same. I just have bits form Claire’s and also home bargains have some great little child friendly make up bits, bath bombs and perfumes.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/11/2020 20:03

The mists are a much better idea.

Lots of little girls go through makeup/perfume/nailpolish phases at her age, as long as you're clear about the 'rules' it's harmless & they come out the other side of it. I prefer the kiddies nail polish because it peels off & so you don't need to use nail polish remover.

& 'no makeup outside the house' stopped me having to take them out looking like clowns, without upsetting them bybtelling them 'I'm not taking you out looking like that!!'

S111n20 · 07/11/2020 20:05

@Ohdoleavemealone thanks for that. Just looking through for my daughter now.

winniesanderson · 07/11/2020 20:08

You used to be able to get nail varnishes that could wash off with soapy water. I remember buying some for my dd when she was around that age and I didn't want to use things like harsh nail varnish remover on her nails but also didn't want to send her into school with it on. I imagine you can still get things like that.

emelsie · 07/11/2020 20:09

I wouldn't personally but If you go on Zara website and the girls or baby girls accessories section they have a whole section of eau de toilette for children , they may be more subtle.

Newnamenewopenme · 07/11/2020 20:11

I would get her a body spray like impulse, they aren’t as strong smelling if she puts loads on.

I don’t see the problem with getting her it if that’s what she is interested in, I don’t agree with forcing other interests on her. If you are going to get her make up I would look at adult make up from revolution, it’s not that expensive and kids make up always seems gloopy and garish colours. My partners kids have miceller water and cotton wool and know to take it all off once they have finished playing and see that as part of the fun.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/11/2020 20:11

I wouldn’t buy that for a 5 year old. Maybe a very light flower cologne if she really was dying for perfume - M&S do a Lily of the Valley, or used to.

Having said that, I have a 5 year old Gdd and have previously bought her a children’s make up set and for Christmas I’ve got her a children’s ‘designer’ nail art set, with polishes and stick-on bits. She adores anything like that.

Funnily enough I’d never have bought such things for my own dds - I’d have thought them disgustingly tacky!

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 07/11/2020 20:15

Don't see the issue, please don't buy makeup from Claire's, it's awful stuff. Better off buying Revolution in Superdrug, cheap as chips but properly tested. I had makeup and perfume from a young age, if I had DDs I wouldn't have a problem with them having it either

Bluetrews25 · 07/11/2020 20:22

Aww, looking at the link, it's perfume for a sleeping princess....she wants that one....it's only £4....my heart melted, FGS get it for her!
Disclaimer - I have adult DSes.

Pinkclarko · 07/11/2020 20:23

Nice as it probably smells, my only issue is that she would stink up the house with it. Even if supervised, little kids love to spray stuff everywhere. I not sure I could be bothered with it!Grin

Ylvamoon · 07/11/2020 20:29

Avon used to have a special kids range when DD was little... worth looking into if they still do it.

Was great non toxic, non staining stuff. Ideal for little people who want to be like grownups!

EerieArmOff · 07/11/2020 20:32

I've got my DD (also 5) a set of roll on perfumes from new look for part of her stocking, along with some nail varnishes/files/stickers..

I see absolutely no harm in it!
