I made a big mistake last year and bought a notebook which is quite frankly useless. I want to buy a second hand laptop from ebay (lots offer 1 year warranty and are around £110/20) can anyone please tell me what I need to look for. Really appreciate your help.

It's for Christmas for my year 7 child. Thanks

What will you be using it for?

@helloxhristmas

What will you be using it for?
Mainly for school work, using teams and general web use. Not needed for gaming but possibly for editing videos. Thanks

I'm not an expert but we just bought my dd a surface pro 7 (new) and she thinks this will be fine for her computer science A level. It's 12" nice and light to carry, looks good. I don't know how the older versions match up but might be worth looking at them if you want something cheaper.

RishiMcRichface · 11/11/2020 07:22

Oh she says it has a good webcam for online working.

I wouldn’t go down the laptop route unless you can afford a new one with warranty. I bought my dd one in year 7 and was constantly taking it into curry’s to be fixed, she then had mine and it’s now running at a snail pace. I have just bought her the new iPad for Christmas and her dad will get her the keyboard to use it as a laptop, ave always found apple to be kid proof and virus proof (have had my iPad for 7 years with no issues). Dd is doing A level now and it does everything she needs it too. He surface pro is also good. You can pick up reconditioned iPads for your price range.

Can I ask for more details on why the current notebook is useless? It might help to work out better what you need to be looking for in the new one. It might also help if you could post the specs of your current one if you could?

Dddaddy · 11/11/2020 08:53

Agree with pp - before you buy a new one what’s the spec of your old one and what programs do you have on it?

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 11/11/2020 09:05

We have a new chromebook. Flex 3i Lenovo. We love it. It's 11.6" so between laptop and ipad size. Can be used as a laptop or the keyboard flipped over for use as a tablet. Wouldn't buy another laptop after this, perfect for home/school work. £300 new. Id agree with PPs, wouldn't get second hand if possible.
