I have made Christmas cakes for family and want to decorate them nicely. I don't want to put plastic things on top and would rather ice and decorate them.

Any beautiful designs to share?

According to dc1, we're doing a snowscene with a gingerbread house and forest of iced gingerbread...

If I get round to icing Xmas Grin it'll be ivy and holly leaves ( cut out with those cut and press thingies that marks with veins) from ready coloured icing , arranged ovelapping (artfully) like a wreath.
And some tiny red piped dots of royal icing to make berries .
Ribbon to make a 'bow' .

We have bought ready rolled marzipan from Waitrose and are planning to have a plainish covering of marzipan and then make marzipan fruits with the offcuts.

SinkGirl · 07/11/2020 18:43

Size and shape? What sort of icing do you prefer to use?

Mistletroll · 07/11/2020 18:44

Royal icing and square.

I am feeling like doing penguins this year.

longtompot · 07/11/2020 19:09

I'm doing this decoration this year. I'm going to sprinkle the baking sheet with Christmassy sprinkles before piping the trees and then put the lolly stick on and more sprinkles. Hopefully that'll mean they'll be decorated both sides.

I've seen some silver icing but not sure what to do with it.

Maybe a white royal icing base with a silver picture.
Oh, I am so crap at stuff like this. I can bake it well but the decoration is a bit pants.

Something simple with stars always look nice. Have a look on Pinterest for ideas

Mistletroll · 08/11/2020 09:24

I have made some including a Christmas Wedding cake using snowflake cutters in three sizes. I dust edible holographic dust on them so they sparkle. The wedding cake had some standing up on each corner. Different sizes for different tiers. You just make some Royal icing and pipe or dollop a bit on then place snowflake in and stand and wait till dry OR support with crumpled foil until dry.

Lakeland have Polar bears this year. I made a wreath from their moulds last year.

burglarbettybaby · 08/11/2020 15:12

I was going to suggest stars on plain icing
Simple ribbon

HelenaJustina · 08/11/2020 15:18

I always do white on white, I love it.

Cut out some Christmas shapes, either stars, snowflakes, snowmen, dust with edible glitter (silver or holographic) and stick on cake.

I’m not at all artistic but it does end up looking okay in a scandi-less-is-more kind of way!

toomuchfaster · 08/11/2020 16:17

@longtompot could you do them flat straight on the cake? No need for decoration on both sides then?

Kenworthington · 08/11/2020 16:33

I did this last year and it was a great success. I know you said you don’t want to put plastic stuff on top . But still

MissEWeatherwax · 08/11/2020 17:25

@Kenworthington I love that. I did something similar in a Kilner jar. Hope you don’t mind but I’m going to borrow that idea.

The whole point is you create a magical forest Star

Have you ever tried making decorations from fondant? It’s basically play dough for adults. I love Zoe’s fancy cakes tutorials on you tube.

A trio of snowmen would look lovely.

herecomesthsun · 10/11/2020 10:09

Heston's candles would make a nice decoration too.
