My dds love reading and I usually try and get them both a Christmas themed book to open on Christmas Day. We have lots of books for reading together as a family like The Night Before Christmas and ds has lots that I read to him as he's only 5 but I would love something for dds that they would enjoy that's full of Christmas magic. They like anything with animals and/or magic. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

The Box of Delights might be good? The language is quite old fashioned, but it is magical and features animals, so could fit the bill?!

Thank you I'll have a look.

Hans Christian Anderson’s Snow Queen
Phillip Pullman’s Dark Materials
Alexander Dumas’s Nutcracker of Nuremberg
Tolkien’s Letters from Father Christmas

I found the box of delights by two different authors but both sound similar so I'm confused. Which one is the one you meant please?

The one by John Masefield. We have a hardback copy with no illustrations, but I believe there is an illustrated version.

My children loved The Box of Delights!
Lots of animals and magic.

Tinsel : the girls who invented Christmas

SistemaAddict · 08/11/2020 16:14

@TheLastStarfighter is the Tolkien one suitable for those who believe in Father Christmas or does it say anywhere the lie that he is not?

I've ordered Tinsel as it looks fab and also The Miracle on Ebenezer Street. I've got ds who is 5 The Night Before The Night Before Christmas, and The Night After Christmas. He loves The Night Before Christmas and thought these would be perfect for him. To be honest I want to read them all myself🎄

Matt Haig has a couple of Christmas books for this age range, including the Girl who saved Christmas.
My DS liked the Boy called Christmas

Was going to say Matt Haig, boy called Christmas is great, includes a mouse and pixies/elves (can't remember which). It's also being made into a Netflix film which I'm hoping will be out for Christmas this year.
