Hi I was hoping to get my son one of the new Xbox S series which is due to go on sale in the next week or so. Tonight I've been looking at preordering it and it's saying it's sold out everywhere. Have I missed my chance to get him it for Christmas?

Sorry most likely. The pre-ordering went on sale a few weeks ago and they pretty much sold out within hours.

Pre-order has been and gone. Some stores might still get on release but it'll be hard getting one. The Switch was impossible to get during lockdown.

This is the best site to try and find one. Any that do come into stock online once it's been released will likely be 4am -6am so be prepared for some early morning phone alerts!
Currently says can be pre ordered from Amazon.de but not sure of it's at a price you want to pay.

That's what I was afraid of! Do you have any idea if it's worth buying one of the older models instead then?

How old is your DS?

An older model would be fine for a younger child, the Xbox series X is an absolutely brilliant console and has a great selection of games. The old S is good too.

For an older child I'd explain and maybe promise one when you can get one if you can't get one on the day.

I think you can still hold out hope. I think more stores will be getting a bit more stock on things like this. A lot will pop up in the black Friday deals too. Just keep your eye out but I'd imagine you will get your hands on one.

My son is 9 and it would be his first console so it might be ok to get an older version. Thank you.

Thanks for the link but the X series is the more expensive console and more than I wanted to pay.

Thanks I found it on the German amazon site but I'm scared of clicking to buy as I can't understand a word it says! I can't see a way of translating the site either.

@Seabrookscheeseandonion I use chrome on my phone and it popped up asking did I want to translate to English but Google translate will do the same if you copy the Amazon weblink in. Hope you manage to get one in the end Smile

Do you know much about consoles? Bear in mind the cost of the games for the new PS console will likely be around £50+ new, whereas with an Xbox you can get Game Pass subscription which gives you online multiplayer PLUS access to hundreds of games including new releases...

Game pass is great value, there's guides on how to restrict content for younger players online too.

Just seen it's for a 9 year old.. an older Xbox is completely fine and I think you can still do the convert trick (buy up to 3yrs of Xbox live and convert it to Game Pass on the dashboard for £1 - if you Google you can find out how to do it if still running!)

Thank you for replying. I know nothing about consoles but do know his cousin has an Xbox and hopefully they will be able to play together online if I get my son one too.
I'll look into older Xboxes then I think. Maybe I'll wait for the S series release date to check if I'm lucky enough to pick one up and if not get an older version.

I've bought the Xbox one S for ours. They are keeping it on as a legacy product and all games for the S and X will be compatible.

Ds is 9 and he has an S that's nearly 2 years old. It's fine for all the games he plays and the Ultimate Pass meant he could chat and play with his friends during lock down.

If he is wanting to play with his cousin it is worth checking which one he has to make sure they are compatible. xbox360 can't play with xbox one for example, not sure about later models as ds(16) and his friends switched to playstation a couple of years ago. You will also need to buy a xbox live subscription (£40/year) to let him online.

If you can get the Xbox one X over the Xbox one S as it has much more memory. Both are still good consoles though.

The Xbox 360 is too old now. It still works fine but the newer games don’t work on it and they stopped making new games for the 360 a couple of years ago.

The new Xbox Series X (looks like a mini fridge) is due out in November. The pre orders were snapped up in September but you never know. Argos, Smyths & Very all had stock in so worth checking to see if they were able to get some more in.

I asked my older teenager about this, he says it's not worth it and get an older Xbox, he's an avid gamer and has saved up enough that he could buy a new Xbox but he says he's sticking with the Xbox he's already got.

For your DCs age I would go for Minecraft, Terraria, Subnautica and Fortnite games.

You do realise the nee x box s has no disc drive. So all games will have to be downloaded. The xbox x does have a disc drive.

For a 9 year old id jusy go with the x box 1 s, much newer than a 360, and should still be available and in stock.

Try Amazon very early on the day of release. I ordered the Xbox One on the day of release and it arrived a few days before Christmas
