Instax or digital camera for 9 year old?

DS has asked for a digital camera after seeing a friends one this half term.

Wondering whether to get a digital camera or an Instax?

Regarding the instax, does it print the pictures out of the camera or do you have to buy a printer? And does it print every picture you take or do you press print if you want it? And any recommendations for which model for a 9 year old?

Or should I go for a digital? Tech wise we only have an ancient lap top but he is getting a chromebook for Xmas so would he be able to load pics up into cloud that way? Then we could print them via snap fish etc?

Sorry, meant to say please talk to me as if I am a cavewoman and have never seen any tech before. Thanks so much

Op I don't know I'm in same dilemma. Hopefully some one else will come along

I'd go for a digital camera. I'm not sure I'd bother with a instax, they are probably quite expensive to keep filling with ink and paper. They also seem quite bulky to carry around. I was put off kidizoom for because of bulk.

My 9yo has a Nikon S33, hes had his a few years, its an older version of the current W150. They are really easy to use shockproof and can take pictures underwater so handy for holidays (if we are ever allowed abroad again Sad).

One thing I'd look for is Wi fi. These enable a tablet or phone to access the photos via wi-fi and share that way, as well as loading to a cloud.

I’ll go the polar opposite and say instax. I have my now 11 yr old one a couple of years ago and she loved:/loves it. It is basically a Polaroid so prints instantly. She’s built little photo books from it.

How many photos do you have on your phone you never print? To me that’s the same as a digital camera. The instant nature of it makes it special.

I’d say instax I got my Daughter one two years ago and she loves it she has a montage of photos on her board in her room I got the instax 9 but the instax mini 11 is out now the usual come with a pack of 10 shots and you can buy 20 shots in boots for £15 they do print every photo though but some of the bad ones are my daughters favourite ones and she just writes on the bottom #fail 😀

I wouldn't recommend the Instax. DD has one and it was fun to start with however the photo quality is terrible, and you have to print every photo you take which is pretty expensive with kids!
DD is older than your DC so the following year she got a sprocket printer and uses it to print from her smart phone. This is still fun but allows her to choose the photo, filter etc.
In your situation I'd go for the digital camera, much more versatile and cheaper to run.

Instax doesn't save the photos so you print everything you take. Photo quality is pretty bad but it's fun. Cartridges are very expensive.

A digital camera is the opposite- you save everything.

There's the Polaroid Snap that saves photos to an SD card and you can buy cartridges for it too. Prints seem much more reasonable. Not sure about photo quality.

Depends what your DS wants to use it for really.

Digital rather than Instax. Instax are not great quality and do not work at all in the sun. You can get an Instax printer which is a better idea if they have a smartphone- not sure if it can be used with a digital camera or not. On a digital camera front having wifi is a great option. I can download our photos to phone/ipad wherever we are.

When DD was 8 we bought her an ipod touch so she could take photos and listen to music rather than buy a digital camera. Could that be an alternative, maybe with an instant printer?

Instax was great fun until the film ran out and my dd has not really replaced since because it is quite expensive per photo. Having said that she did love it and this thread has made me consider getting her some more film for Christmas! On balance I think digital cameras are less fun/instant but better value and have more longevity. My dd just wanted the look/style of the instax.
