I have a 7yo and 5yo, and we're board game mad in our house, our favourites are:

Carcassonne
King of Tokyo
Quacks of Quedlingberg
Castle Panic
Outfoxed
Kingdomino
Sushi Go Party

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/11/2020 15:47

Dobble
Bananagrams

5 Second Rule. Simple and easy and fun.

Rummikub (like gin rummy, but with tiles like Scrabble).

Old classis like snakes and ladders, Uno.

Our DC also like Cockroach Kitchen, chess, Battleships, Picjk Up Sticks, dominoes, noughts and crosses (I made a xmas themed one out of felt!).

A couple of years ago a fabulous aunt sent dc I Spy with cards and dice, it's nice if the kids can play together without adult supervision, but also not too mind numingly awful to play as a family.

TeenPlusTwenties · 01/11/2020 16:07

Junior scrabble has the words already on it, so fine for the 5yo but probably too boring for the 8yo.
My DDs never got on with scrabble due to dyslexia.

I suggest

  • Sorry!
  • Cadoo.

Ooh excellent thread, I just here to take notes

tigerbear · 01/11/2020 16:13

Exploding Kittens
Left, Right, Centre - the simplest game you’ll ever buy, but quick and easy for all age groups
FWIW, Junior Scrabble was the worst game I’ve ever bought DD, think we only played at once as she found it so easy and boring.

NannyR · 01/11/2020 16:16

Not board games, but Dobble, Uno and Bananagrams are big hits with most of the kids I know. I wouldn't bother buying the junior versions of Dobble and Uno.

AdventCaroline · 01/11/2020 16:21

My Dc are not that keen on Scrabble, they never choose to play it.

We have lots of board games.

9 year old nearly always chooses Labyrinth, Cluedo, Ludo or Zooloretto. A 5 year old might struggle with Cluedo though - and I find Ludo is often a tantrum waiting to happen.

Guess Who was a popular one when mine were your Dc's age.

Big fan of these Lego dice games. There's a whole series.

My 6yo daughter enjoys this one, 2-7 players.

Brainbox.
You get different versions, but you can use them together, do you can get cards suitable for them. Some are easier. We have Dinosaurs and Around the UK. No prior knowledge of subject needed.

RandomMess · 01/11/2020 16:43

Frustration as it is mainly luck so equal chance of winning for all players.

Autumnspice · 01/11/2020 16:56

Some of our favourites
Carcassonne
Ticket to ride
Sushi go party
Lattice
Kingdomino

Elfenland

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 01/11/2020 17:02

Junior scrabble has a double sided board doesn't it? So you can flip it over and play 'normal' scrabble?
There's a junior cluedo as well (or at least there used to be) that mine enjoyed at that age.
Sorry/frustration
Pick up sticks
Happy families
White rabbit
Uno/whot
Blokus
We used to have a couple of Roald Dahl board games, no idea if they still exist.
Tumbling Monkeys

Thats a few that my now teens enjoyed when they were younger. Some of them might not still exist!.

JellyTeapot · 01/11/2020 17:04

Labyrinth is brilliant, DS got it when he was 6.

Krook · 01/11/2020 17:05

Junior Monopoly
Dobble
Pictureureka (sp?)

Phillpot12 · 01/11/2020 19:27

Rat a Tat Cat - card game
Draughts
Sleeping Queens - cats game
Labyrinth is great

hels71 · 01/11/2020 19:30

Too many monkeys. ( card game)
Uno
Frustration
Cadoo

MrsLJ2014 · 01/11/2020 22:40

You can still get Junior Cluedo and my 6 year old loves it! I think there's 2 versions - case of the missing cake and case of the broken toy.
