Christmas Day desserts

What are you planning for your desserts?
Do you go traditional pudding or have a mix up?

I'm thinking a pavlova type dessert & something chocolate based.

Interested to hear others' choices for the big day.

I’m really not that bothered by Christmas deserts but will probably go for something chocolately rather than the traditional - and pre made as there won’t be a lot of us!

UndertheCedartree · 18/10/2020 19:44

We have a Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream for myself and DP and a chocolate pudding for the DC.

nixso29 · 18/10/2020 19:46

MIL is always in charge of desserts and oh my word they never disappoint! All homemade and we have had to name a few: sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake, lemon tart, pavlova. Then SILs MIL will make the more traditional Xmas pudding and rice pudding (not my thing bit I appreciate others enjoy it)

ktsc89 · 18/10/2020 19:47

My dad makes this (or a slight variation of): thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/winter-bombe-chocolate-cherries-vin-santo-panettone-and-pistachios

It can be made ahead and popped in the freezer so easy prep

AuntieMarys · 18/10/2020 19:47

Tiramisu trifle.

MaverickDanger · 18/10/2020 19:47

Either pavlova or roulade and a chocolate log for later.

SaigonSaigon · 18/10/2020 19:49

I always used to make one but got to admit with less time now I just buy a nice one from M&S - usually chocolatey - as well as an Xmas pud

LlamaofDrama · 18/10/2020 19:50

We always have a traditional Christmas pud, with an alternative because quite a few of us don't like it. The rules are no chocolate, because we eat it all day, no citrus because someone doesn't like that, no coffee ditto, no nuts ditto. And must be vegetarian. It's tricky! Tarte ratings with fresh homemade proper custard has made several appearances and is practically a classic now.

ChristmasCantComeSoonEnough · 18/10/2020 19:52

I think I will have to do a xmas pudding as lighting it with brandy is all part of the day. Not everyone likes it though so I think I will do a few different puddings, cut them into small portions so people can try a few. So maybe rich chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding, Christmas pudding and an apple/cinnamon pudding. They would all go with cream or ice cream so people can suit themselves.
I do have a sweet tooth though so the pudding is every bit as important as the main on Christmas Day.

Spam88 · 18/10/2020 19:53

We're a traditional household. There must be Christmas pudding, mince pies and Yule log, although extras are of course welcome.

33goingon64 · 18/10/2020 19:54

Christmas pudding and brandy butter. YUM.

Lovemusic33 · 18/10/2020 20:04

Either a roulade or a cheesecake, possibly lemon as we are usually sick of chocolate. In the past I have done trifle or warm brownies with ice cream.

burglarbettybaby · 18/10/2020 20:08

There's local deli that sell amazing mince pies so I will serve some heated with ice cream and make a chocolate log with the dc maybe on Christmas eve as it's nice and easy and they will love it

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 18/10/2020 22:42

We usually get a chocolate log as part of our traditions and then whatever catches our eye in the Christmas magazines. Plan to get a couple that can be frozen so I can buy in advance as imagine shopping closer to the time may have stock issues.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 19/10/2020 14:53

We’re (hopefully) at MILs this year, but I usually do Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies, and then a pavlova or roulade, for the people who don’t eat the traditional stuff.

happymummy12345 · 19/10/2020 14:58

We hate Christmas pudding, Christmas cake and mince pies. We always have homemade trifle on Christmas Day. But Yule log in the evening is the best thing about Christmas for me. I love it

movingonup20 · 19/10/2020 15:10

Christmas pud of course. If we have guests/go to my parents then they'll be something like apple crumble for mum & dd who both don't like dried fruit type things but not making plans until at least 1 December this year

Lalanbaba · 19/10/2020 15:27

This year will be only adults and the toddler and not fans of Xmas pudding. I'm planning to make either individual triffles or caramel cheesecake (not baked)
Will also be mince pies and chocs/biscuits around

AdaColeman · 19/10/2020 15:36

Traditional Christmas pudding here, but might also do something lighter such as Pear Belle Helene as another option.

Lockdownhairdontcare · 19/10/2020 17:28

I have ordered a winter berry roulade from our local deli. Homemade un iced Christmas cake to be served as part of cheeseboard that evening.

Will make homemade trifle for Boxing Day, it’s a family tradition.

Wheresmycider · 19/10/2020 17:36

I have made a blackforest trifle a few years now. Very easy and tasty. Sometimes a pain to find cherry flavour jelly though.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 19/10/2020 17:45

I dont really like Christmas pudding, but dh does so probably will do that. Then something chocolatey and either pavlova or cheesecake. Lots of puddings in our house for just the 4 of us, and I don't care if its too much- more for boxing day!

orangenasturtium · 19/10/2020 18:40

Nobody can agree on pudding here so we have multiple options. We have the same options on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and what is left gets finished the next day when we have a leftovers buffet.

Usually we have everyone's favourites - Christmas pudding, mince pies with brandy butter, Christmas cake, a black cherry and chocolate Yule Log, trifle, a fresh fruit and cheese platter, rainbow jellies and ice cream (for the little ones and a nostalgic adult DS Grin), then a "guest dessert" - whatever I feel inspired to make or, one year, a Heston Blumenthal chocolate sprout.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 19/10/2020 20:20

Love the term “guest dessert”

SuperFairy · 19/10/2020 20:39

We don’t do desserts, there are only ever 3 of us and we all prefer a starter. A while after the main course I’ll put out some self serve cheese and crackers and we’ll have that during the later afternoon/ evening in front of the TV with some Christmas Cake (that I made this weekend!)
