Christmas Day desserts

What are you planning for your desserts?
Do you go traditional pudding or have a mix up?

I'm thinking a pavlova type dessert & something chocolate based.

Interested to hear others' choices for the big day.

This is hands down, the best fancy, decadent pud in the whole world. And its easy peasy to make.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/10/2020 20:49

DH loves a Black Forest Gateaux, and M&S are doing an amazing looking one this year, so I'll get one of them for him and DD and DM. I'll make a low-carb cheesecake for myself - they're a faff, hence only making them once a year, but they're amazing. DS will be quite happy with the chocolate from his stocking!

VestaTilley · 19/10/2020 21:09

Always Christmas pud and cream here, trifle on Boxing Day.

DS is 18 months though, we may introduce something else if he doesn’t like Christmas pud as he gets older. When I was growing up the alternative was Vienetta! Maybe we’ll have that.

Thatwentbadly · 19/10/2020 22:47

I have no idea. DD2 is allergic to milk, soya, coconut and blueberries and maybe egg. So nothing too nice.

sandgrown · 19/10/2020 22:56

Wheresmycider do you have a recipe for your Black Forest trifle? It sounds delicious

Screamnastic · 19/10/2020 23:04

Individual trifles and mini mince pies are traditional here. Easy to make gluten free.

MyNameForToday1980 · 19/10/2020 23:07

We always have a Christmas pudding knocking around. Though sometimes don't start it for several days (or months) after Christmas.

This year we've got a Cook chocolate and rasp roulade (in the freezer already in case of full lockdown), I'll snazz it up with some icing sugar and decorative robins.

tanqueray10 · 27/10/2020 05:00

We are. total mix of traditional pud lovers and traditional pud haters here!

I usually do Christmas pudding , then a pavlova shaped like a christmas wreath topped with loads of berries, Nigella’s lemons and blackberry trifle. The children won’t eat any of them so usually something chocolately for them as well!

Desserts hardly get touched on Christmas day as we are all so full but I love having a fridge full for the next couple of days.

FlatandFabulous · 27/10/2020 05:03

Nigella's Christmas log, pavlova and Christmas pudding ice cream. We are in Aus so the ice cream is my compromise.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/10/2020 05:09

DH has got DDs rather excited about setting the Christmas pudding on fire (growing the next generation of pyromaniacs Grin) I'm the one not keen on fruit cake style things, so there will be another pudding in a similar style... Haven't decided between chocolate or syrup sponge yet.

With lots of custard!

cariadlet · 27/10/2020 05:42

I'll buy a small Christmas pudding for me and MIL and make a chocolate cheesecake for dp and dd.

I made my Christmas cake yesterday and will feed it every week. We'll have some of that in the evening.

Bowerbird5 · 27/10/2020 06:05

We normally have Christmas pudding but hardly anyone wants it. Last year we had a change. During the year when out DS1 ordered pavlova. Now being half Aussie I am a bit of an expert on pavlova so mentioned each time that they shouldn’t put pavlova on the menu unless it was. It was meringue. So he challenged me to make a better one. So I decided to make it for Christmas. I bought a meringue from a well known local firm. Christmas Eve I made the pavlova one large and a medium and small. On Christmas Day I put the fresh whipped cream on both and layered the pavlova with forest fruits on the bottom, fresh pineapple and mango (middle)then banana and passion fruit ( a must) with strawberries and kiwis on the top.The meringue got cream and fruit. I made him have some of each. They all agreed the proper pavlova was the best and said from now on that is what they wanted for Christmas dessert. I was very pleased to be proved right but DS1 says he will now always be disappointed if he gets meringue🤭🤣 when out for a meal.

It looked fantastic as it was layered so made it very special.

Flatandfabulous My mum used to make a gorgeous iced Christmas pud ice cream. It had fruit soaked in brandy ( I think) and cherries and Angelica. It was delicious.

@IDontMindMarmite that recipe looks amazing! I was going to say I normally just do profiteroles for the DC as it's their favourite but feel it's a bit boring. You've just sold my problem thank you!

Happy to spread the joy that is that recipe! By the way I've seized the chocolate and over whipped the cream and it still works out fine. Don't think you can screw it up. Grin

Omeara · 27/10/2020 08:04

Profiteroles and Christmas pudding.

Babdoc · 27/10/2020 08:13

Home made chestnut chocolate log. I make a chocolate Swiss roll, then fill it with sweetened chestnut puree before rolling it up and icing it with melted Nutella, then sieving a thin sprinkle of icing sugar on as snow, and popping in a holly sprig from the garden. Served with single cream. The kids are grown up now, but still insist on it. None of us like Christmas pudding.

rosebird33 · 27/10/2020 08:33

Husband loves a traditional Christmas cake but I will make my white chocolate cheesecake with the lotus crumb its absolutely the most delicious cake I have ever made

Angel2702 · 27/10/2020 08:37

I don’t like Christmas pudding but I love when it’s brought out and lit at the table. Will be very sad not having it this year.

My grandad always had apple pie whilst everyone else had Christmas pudding so I always had that with him. So I have carried on that tradition. My husband will want a chocolate roulade so will get that for him and the kids.

Can you share your recipe?! That cheesecake sounds absolutely lovely!

Holy moly that sounds legendary. Did you invent it?
snowmanshoes · 27/10/2020 09:37

I’m going to actually get a Christmas pudding this year because I think my youngest might actually like it and she can’t remember tasting one Shock so I’ll get a small one for her to try. Then I’ve ordered the chocolate cake iced to look like a Christmas pudding from Sainsbury’s (2 reasons; 1) it’s just a chocolate cake really and 2) it doesn’t need to go in the fridge and we don’t have much fridge and freezer space but it will look nice on the table!!
I’ve already bought some macarons as they’re a favourite for us and some frozen churros!

Babdoc · 27/10/2020 10:48

IDontMindMarmite, well, I use a standard chocolate Swiss roll recipe from my ancient edition of the Good Housekeeping cookbook, but I invented the chestnut filling as it’s less sickly than chocolate, and I changed years ago from melted chocolate to Nutella as it adds to the taste with the hazelnut in it. So I suppose it’s “adapted” rather than “invented”!

MsMiaWallace · 27/10/2020 11:37

Asda are doing a gingerbread cheesecake that looks lovely.

I made this layered panna cotta last year and it was delicious, so will be making the same this year.
