Happyland/Little People sets.

Cars.

Playdoh.

Books.

mamado · 11/10/2007 17:51

if you want to stretch to it we've found a wheelybug the best toy ever....dd2 uses it all the time to learn to 'kneel-walk', walk and barge into things! And dd1 [nearly 4] still uses it a lot

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 18:02

will he not just eat play doh?

would he be able to use a wheely bug not being able to walk? i thought they were for older kids.

yeah why not get a walker for him???
or they have a good activity table in asda for 15 quid

Flier · 11/10/2007 18:05

a wooden trike. ours was a pin toys one, best toy we got for ds, used it for ages, inside and out.

colditz · 11/10/2007 18:08

playdoh ideal - sit next to him and just keep showing him not to put it in his mouth - he will get the gist fairly quickly. Cars to roll around on the floor, crayons and paper, megablocks are good, a very simple strain track, bath toys to pour and squirt

TwigorTreat · 11/10/2007 18:08

this if you don't have anything like it

and get this one because its much sturdier than any of the others I've seen

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 18:13

we've got a walker already and we've got the leapfrog activity table. got them last xmas thinking he would use them a few months after. should have waited til his birthday!!

if he can't walk surely he won't know how to pedal a trike?? or am i underestimating him too much?

Will he not be near walking at 18 months? Is he crawling? As i said, dd2 uses the wheelybug to crawl around on knees whilst pushing - will also just play with antennas and wheels. We think its the best, most lasting toy for little'uns. Dd1 got it for her 1st and its been used ever since. Plus they look nice, which is rare for a toy!

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 18:16

he's just started crawling.

i got toys last year thinking oh he'll be sitting up soon so we'll get toys for that. they then sat in their boxes for 4 months whilst he learnt to sit up so i don't really want to get toys based on the fact that he'll be walking soon after. for all we know it could be another 8 months!!

toy kitchen. our ds twin got far more use than dd twin out of 'hers'

UniSarah · 11/10/2007 20:38

duplo. it'll last him a while, at first he may just like to fiddle with it.
toy cars or trains. good for crawlers or walkers.
play dough stuff. play doh tastes BAD, he won;t eat much of it, but don't leave him un supervised with it unless you like it all over the carpet.
Sit and ride toy of some kind, don;t have to be walking to use one of those. boy was enjoying indepentant movement with his "car" months before he was walking alone.
small chair and table. again a long term present so maybe go for something slightly too big.

pointydog · 11/10/2007 20:46

a ball

ILoveDolly · 11/10/2007 20:51

you could get him rolling toy - my dd loved pushing one of those jingly cylinder inflatable thingies when crawling and now she can walk still loves to roll on it.

Sazisi · 11/10/2007 21:20

A wheely bug

Duplo

Little people

DavidTennantsMistress · 11/10/2007 21:29

DS is 19 months and loves his cars at the mo, he's got a thomas starter set (my bargin of the week - 6.99 in woolies!)

walker/ride on toys - DS had his first one before he could walk proeprly and it really helped him,

failing that i'm suggesting family get little people if they choose to get him things, or building blocks, aqua draws I hear are good, and also a little kitchen (If I can find one reasonable enough! lol) with pots to go with it - hours of fun.

also going to get a feew boxes - not being a scrooge but he's really into climbing in them rihgt now!

bozza · 11/10/2007 21:30

He deifnitely won't be able to pedal for ages, my 3yo has only just got it this summer. I think people mean a trike that he uses his feet to move, or maybe one with a harness and parent handle.

WendyWeber · 11/10/2007 21:41

If you don't mind it not being for him exactly - in Lidl today they have a very cute wooden height-measuring-thing, with elephants on, with 5 or 6 spaces for photos to be inserted at different heights. It's lovely and only about a fiver!

WendyWeber · 11/10/2007 21:46

Hammer toys are great at this age.

DS2 used to have a fab plastic one where you hit a coloured button at the front and a matching coloured man flew out of the hole at the back and then had to be re-inserted - they were all different shapes too. He played with that for years

WendyWeber · 11/10/2007 21:51

Also, scroll about halfway down here to Pound-a-Ball.

Lots of good toys there actually but no age guidance.

WendyWeber · 11/10/2007 21:55

More here - Teddy Roll Land and Activity Fantasy Play Tower both look good.

(I miss having toddler toys sometimes, can you tell? {grin])

nappyaddict · 12/10/2007 00:02

he's got a sit on car already and one of those rolly round inflatable things.

loves cars and trains so going to get him some of those. seen a chunky transporter thing in woolies i think he'll like and also a pound a ball.

aqua draw i had thought about but he doesn't scribble or anything yet.

Pop=up toys (the sort where you push a button and a dog or cat or bunny shoots up out of a flap). A rolling car thingy - Mothercare do one - a set of connected slopes with little wooden cars that you drop in at the top and they roll down. I think it's called a Rolling Slope. DS got one for Xmas when he was 15 months and still loves it at just gone 3.

AussieSim · 12/10/2007 00:22

Mr Potato Head is great for this age group, and these days he has all kinds of costumes, although my fav is still the original set.

nappyaddict · 12/10/2007 00:41

oh i think i know what you mean. is it wooden with like ramps that go across one another and car falls off the end of one and goes down the next?
