laptop on a budget

I'm considering a laptop for ds1 (13). He has access to mine and a very basic (£120) one that's pretty awful but thought he might like one of his own. He's not massively tech orientated and he does enjoy a bit of Fifa on the xbox and is very happy with the iphone 7 he got last year. He uses the laptops he has access to for school work, researching things he's interested in and YouTube. For mindless games he uses his phone.

So what is a realistic amount to expect to pay for something that would be good for the things mentioned above - he wouldn't be gaming on it.

Thanks for any advice - he's so difficult to buy for as not materialistic (a good thing) and this is really an attempt to get him a main gift as I can't think of a lot else...

acer and dell tend to be reasonable brands. Only othern info i'd say to keep an eye out for is Microsoft seem to have gone towards the subscription service now - the laptop I bought I have to pay 5.99 a month to access all the Microsoft apps such as word, excel etc (it was free the first year due to deal I got on laptop at currys I think they covered a years subscirption)

We went to pc world for a laptop for my daughter for college and they recommended a Chromebook, said better than a cheap laptop as Windows will take up a lot of the memory/capacity and slow it down. Daughter loves the Chromebook, hers was £299 but saw cheaper ones. I'm quite envious of it!!

I would recommend a Chromebook over a laptop. I got a cheap Asus one and it does everything I need for uni and streaming etc. Think mine was in the sale £170 down to £149. Liked it so much I bought 2 more for DC at full price.

Thanks for replies everyone.

A Chromebook sounds good. I'm fortunate enough to be able to download Word through work - does anyone know whether I'll be able to put it on the Chromebook for him that way?
