Help! Need Greek themed items for adult hamper

Just that really. I want to make a hamper for DH. He is obsessed with the Greek Islands [as am I] and we holiday there as often as we can. Hoping to cheer him up in the dreary winter months after Christmas with this. I have found a beautiful wooden jigsaw called Greek Vacation at Wentworth puzzles for a starter. I'm looking for a good Greek cookbook so any recommendations most welcome. Ditto any Greek based novels? [ He's read Captain Corelli's Mandolin.] Also any other suggestions ? I will add some food and sweets -items he likes such as baclava, olives etc. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The house on paradise street is a fantastic autobiographical book about living in Athens - I really recommend it

What an amazing present! I want one too Smile

There's an amazing film called Mediterraneo about italian soldiers stranded for a few years on a greek island. The music, cinematography and story are breathtaking. Definitely worth getting the DVD.

I lived in Greece for many years. I now live close to this shop and buy everything I miss. Ion chocolate especially. They do mail order.

Can you update with a final list of everything you end up buying please.

I think I might go the hamper route this year, based on your thread. Just have to think of appropriate themes.

This kind of thing?

A large one of those blue glass eyes, meant to protect (and ward off evil!) would be nice too.

what about an olive tree? Or a grow your own type thing. My mums a gardener and still has the one I bought her a few years ago. I think I may have ordered it through notontheyhighstreet.com ? The cherry tree i got her last year was from there anyway x We got my niece an 'adopt an olive tree' pack a few years ago. You get olive oil sent to you; here's a link for a greek one.www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjazvTch-3rAhXG7NUKHWLgADYYABABGgJ3cw&ae=2&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAASEuRo1fVQq_7xh1-_Ag8w3P1NtQ&sig=AOD64_0SJlPnqN6MpcBbT08APFz9JQ2aTQ&q&adurl&ved=2ahUKEwib-ezch-3rAhWESBUIHVySBFcQ0Qx6BAgPEAE

Thank you again - such invaluable ideas - my plan is coming together nicely now thanks to you all.
@Jeremyironseverything yes, of course I will update and glad you have found the thread helpful. I really enjoy the themed hampers as do the recipients but be warned that once you start it you won't be allowed to stop! It's great fun though - well received by DH in the past was a garden bird one - nesting box, camera, various bird food and dispensers, garden bird book etc. if that helps anyone planning to do the same for difficult to buy for bods.

You've not long missed Greek week at Lidl. My Lidl had a few leftover bits like nuts and butterbeans in sauce you might find some in your nearest? Or Asian supermarkets often have Baklava and other things like that.

sueelleker · 18/09/2020 09:32

Waitrose do the butterbeans, and stuffed vine leaves in tins.

Dozer · 18/09/2020 09:34

Love this.

Alcohol would be good - pink wine and ouzo!

Victoria Hislop has a few books about Greece, The Island, Those who are Loved, The Thread, The Sunrise (although that is Cyprus).

Stephen Fry books on Myths and Heroes.

An Ancient Greek Coin - check eBay as they have ones with Gods on and you can pick one up for under £50.

If you live near a World Foods supermarket, they often sell Mediterranean products like olive soap etc.
