Heard some families do this ,just wondering if you dress up

I won't be personally.

Why is it always dress, heels and Spanx or PJs on mumsnet? What about a smart casual dress that’s festive but comfy?

ChristmasCroissant · 20/12/2019 19:56

I do, my DD is happy in her new PJ's though (we all have new PJ's on Christmas Eve to open under the tree).

AdoptedBumpkin · 20/12/2019 19:56

We do in a smart casual way. Nothing too grand. We are country folk now Grin

MistyMinge2 · 20/12/2019 20:00

Depends where we are and who we're with. I like to make a bit of effort and do my hair and makeup. I bought a new dress last year, but nothing new this year.

70sWitch · 20/12/2019 22:22

Yes. Always but especially this year. We are dressing up 70s style GrinGlitterball

Werkwerkwerkwerk · 21/12/2019 07:31

Red and gold bikini for durning the day, then silk Camilla play suit for dinner/lunch.
I've always got dressed up for Christmas!!

Equimum · 21/12/2019 08:07

It’s just the four of us home this year, so no. The boys are getting bikes, so it’ll be jeans and warm jumpers in preparation for a walk/bike ride. We will put a bit more effort in on Christmas Eve when we are going on a Santa train followed by the crib service.

Crystal87 · 21/12/2019 10:03

Not really. We stay in but do have family visiting in the morning. I'll get dressed and wear make up like I normally do but won't buy anything special to wear.

Kielyo123 · 23/12/2019 00:32

Jeans and a nice top/jumper or a jumper dress and black tights maybe. I always like to look smartish but have given up on oh and dd.
I dont buy anything that isnt comfortable so never worry about that!

CrowleysBentley · 23/12/2019 02:09

I've got a jersey skater dress, and a lovely chunky knit soft warm cardigan to wear, either with leggings and fluffy socks and slippers, or with wooly tights and slippers. I do tend to get dressed, and I usually wear something new and nice, sort my hair out and put a bit of makeup on, but generally not dressy.

Sometimes DS and DD get dressed, other times they're in pyjamas. I don't think DS is going out in the evening to meet his friends in the pub this year, so he'll likely put on some tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie or something comfy. I have got them both some nice new clothes this year though, so who knows. DD is getting a new onesie, and would live in pyjamas given the option, so she might well have a shower with the body shop stuff I've got her, and change into that to lounge about in.

BiddyPop · 23/12/2019 09:17

Dressed up as in picking out something nice from my wardrobe - not just jeans and a jumper. Possibly involving a dress and heels, possibly not - but nice.

DD must wear jeans and a nice top, not tracksuit or sports leggings (her non-school-uniform uniform).

DH will wear a shirt, possibly a tie.

We don't do full on formality - no black tie or ballgowns for dinner. But we do make an effort.

NotAClue101 · 23/12/2019 09:56

We've always got a bit dressed up...my gran always asked that we made an effort, and being as she made an amazing effort with Christmas dinner, nibbles, Boxing Day food and all over Xmas food, we always did it for her...now it's just the norm even though she is no longer with us. Normally after dinner we change if wanting too into something that allows comfort after over indulging

Ambrose2 · 23/12/2019 18:42

Yes because we usually go out. Last year we didn't go out at all and it was really weird and I didn't get dressed and eating Christmas dinner in last nights pyjamas just made me feel thoroughly gross. I wasn't hosting or going out, so I thought it wouldn't be terrible to stay in my pyjamas plus the washing machine was broken but it ruined it a bit tbh

Loveislandaddict · 23/12/2019 18:45

Yes, we dress up, especially if going to someone else’s house. I think it’s a mark or respect to the host.

ginyogarepeat · 23/12/2019 19:29

Yep, usually a smart/casual dress or skirt and top that I've got for wearing over the Christmas period and beyond! DC too - new shirt or jumper but only stuff they'll wear beyond Christmas. We won't be going anywhere either! It's just a day I like to make the effort for....

OpheIiaBaIIs · 23/12/2019 21:05

Yes, even though it's only me, DH and DD. I usually wear something vintage and whack some greenery in my hair. Whatever I wear has to be comfortable too so I can eat loads and not look like I'm 10 months pregnant

bigbubbles · 23/12/2019 21:07

silk Camilla play suit for dinner/lunch

Doe your other half have a Charles outfit?

dogcrazy · 23/12/2019 21:33

No. I’m only getting dresssed at all because we’re going to my mums.

Leflic · 23/12/2019 21:43

Yep. Usually a nice red dress of some description. Makes the day a celebration.
I’m not a PJ’s all day person though. I just look a mess. My mate pulls it off with sparkly slippers and beautiful longe wear. You can work it or you can’t I think.

hopeishere · 23/12/2019 22:28

Yes. I'll wear a dress or something nice. Not jeans. We go to my sisters in the morning and she's usually dressed up a bit too. DHs family don't really bother though. I get into pjs about 7.30!!

We always had a new outfit as children.

anyoldname76 · 23/12/2019 23:19

Christmas leggings and jumper for me

PeriComoToes · 24/12/2019 06:53

Brilliant BigBubbles you sound like a fun crowd! Grin

Laughed at that 'might not go' quote, I have that dilemma this year as I've put on so much weight am busting out of all my posh dresses Grin.

Mixed bag here. I do usually dress up because we always did in our house when I was growing up. It's a special occasion even if it is only your own living room. Husband manages a nicer t shirt and jeans usually (never a proper shirt), MIL always wears sweat pants and t shirt as per usual. Always dressed DC up when younger, have no say in the matter these days but usually get something nice to wear on Christmas day as a present so invariably worn that day. I don't expect others to dress up but it would be nice. I expect the more casual among my lot would probably prefer it less if I dressed down a bit more but there you go.

PeriComoToes · 24/12/2019 06:54

More not less!

InTheCludgie · 24/12/2019 07:33

It would usually be jeans and xmas jumper but I'm a stone heavier than last year and the jumper felt a bit tight when I tried it on last week. So maybe a dressier looser top this time.

lilgreen · 24/12/2019 08:40

Jeans and Christmas dinner are not compatible Xmas Wink
