Heard some families do this ,just wondering if you dress up

I won't be personally.

Well, usually wear new clothes for Xmas day, something comfortable but dressy! This year,? I have no idea! I know I've not got anything new, tempted to just wear nice pjs all day!

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 20/12/2019 07:06

You only need to dress the top half as that's all anyone sees accross the table. So baggy pj bottoms and slippers and a sparkly cashmere jumper and full face of make up should do the job.

mousemousse · 20/12/2019 07:07

No I've never understood this, it's a time to be relaxed with family = PJ's or at best loungewear. The idea of sitting in a dress with spanx on like at some job interview is horrendous!

greenlynx · 20/12/2019 07:21

Jeans and smart top here. I would do light make, DD asked to do her nails. This thread made me thinking about shoes, I usually wore comfy flats but they torn a bit so not suitable any more.

EdithWeston · 20/12/2019 07:23

Yes, always dress up a bit

I don't equate dressing up with being uncomfortable though (it must be difficult if all the nicer/more fun clothes you want aren't actually enjoyable in the wearing).

Do tend to agree that it's the top half (ie what can be seen at table) which matters most

Once came across a family who had a rule that any wearable items given for Xmas must be donned immediately. That must have led to some interesting ensembles!

Barbararara · 20/12/2019 08:10

First Christmas at the in laws dh didn’t warn me that in his family they wear pjs to breakfast (only day of the year that’s allowed) and my night wear hadn’t been chosen with that in mindShock

BillHadersNewWife · 20/12/2019 09:47

I'm in Oz and keep thinking about this thread. I'm going shopping tomorrow and might have to get myself a nice sundress or a loose jumpsuit or something. I fancy being a bit festive...maybe red!

Cineraria · 20/12/2019 10:09

Well we do get dressed but in our usual clothes. Then again, none of us generally wear really casual stuff like jeans, leggings and joggers, so maybe it is a bit dressed up. We could definitely go out to eat like that. I'll be in a stretchy wrap dress, DH and DS1 in cords or chinos with a shirt and DS2 has some purple cord dungarees with robins on the knees and a white shirt.

Megan2018 · 20/12/2019 10:13

It depends. Some years we do, some we don’t.
This year it is just DH, me and newborn DD. I’ll have a shower after mucking out horse first thing, then clean PJ’s for the day as we are just slobbing on the sofa this year.
Boxing Day we are hosting and it will be Xmas Jumper and jeans

BearSoFair · 20/12/2019 11:06

No, just jeans and jumper. If we go out it it's only to family who all dress the same so never felt the need to dress up. I don't even own make up and DH wears a suit every day for work, no chance of him putting one on for Christmas!

JaJoJe · 20/12/2019 11:38

I dress up (I just like to, not over dressed just a nice new dress I can wear again through the year), kids wear new PJs and DH doesn't bother.

DuesToTheDirt · 20/12/2019 12:53

Each to his own. In our house pyjamas are for bed, and eating Xmas dinner in pyjamas would be totally bizarre.

Benjispruce · 20/12/2019 16:55

Always make an effort, otherwise it’s a bit like a normal Sunday dinner.

BarbedBloom · 20/12/2019 18:28

I wear a nice dress but I wear a dress most of the time anyway. Not super dressy but not pjs anyway

Ragwort · 20/12/2019 18:35

Smartish, but I don’t really own many ‘dressy’ clothes. But certainly not pyjamas, do people really spend all day in pjs? I can’t imagine eating the Christmas meal in pjs Shock and if I’ve cooked a meal I expect my family to have courtesy to get dressed.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 20/12/2019 18:42

Well said Ragwort. The only times I ever come downstairs in my pyjamas is if the house alarm has gone off.

DuchessofManchester · 20/12/2019 18:44

I always wear a nice dress with heels and dh wears a shirt and his nice jeans. Definately no pjs here xx

I was considering wearing a sparkly top or dress as they've sat in my wardrobe unused for many a year. Cooking and food mess may make me come to regret that though.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 20/12/2019 18:52

Oh God no. Why get dressed up to sit about eating/drinking all day? Comfy all the way!

(I'm in the pyjama camp, and to whoever asked: yes, I wash. I even put on fresh pyjamas.)

fartingsparkles · 20/12/2019 18:57

We just dress as normal. I couldn't eat anything other than breakfast in pjs, but wouldn't want to be cooking in 'nice' clothes. It's just me and 2 dcs so we will probably be in Christmas tops and jeans. Comfy but dressed!

maddy68 · 20/12/2019 19:02

We do

MrsWhites · 20/12/2019 19:03

Smart casual here, nice dress and boots or jeans and a nice top maybe. I was always bought new clothes for Christmas and Boxing Day so have sort of just carried this on and now do the same with my own children so we all look a bit smarter than the average day (hopefully)!

PiggyInTheMiddle19 · 20/12/2019 19:23

Depends what we're doing the kids always do. Dd has a lovely dress but it's not an occasion type so can have lots of other use. Ds normally wears a shirt and Jeans.
This Yr as staying in. Dd will prob be in pjs.
Ds no doubt will put on his football kit as soon as he opens it.
Not sure on myself and dh as I'll be 36w pregnant and only leggings are comfy due to bump and varicose veins, so definitely leggings and whatever top fits and comfy.
