So for many reasons our big family meal is a few days after Xmas day. 6 of us but only small oven. Don’t want to do full Xmas meal as we will have all had one if not two by then. So although it’s a sit down meal my plan is to serve help yourself style. No starter but.
Glazed ham
Saffron roasties
Pigs in blankets
Pickled onions , red cabbage and coleslaw
Lobster mac and cheese
Warm bread.

But I feel I need another dish to go along side. Any ideas?

Honestly, by 2 or 3 days after Christmas, I would much prefer ham, new potatoes and a nice salad. Another big dinner would be a chore.

BIWI · 16/12/2019 17:43

You need more veg - what about a green salad?

karala · 16/12/2019 17:46

yes I second a salad and I'm not sure you need the macaroni cheese

Weatherwax · 16/12/2019 17:58

Something green. I think broccoli would be nice. Theres a yum purple sprouting with chilli recipe I had once, I'm sure you could find something online (I'm too lazy to check!)

TFSRM · 16/12/2019 18:48

Definitely salad and new potatoes

RJnomore1 · 16/12/2019 18:50

Salad and if possibly do cauliflower cheese not macaroni

The cheese will be good with the ham but by a few days past Xmas my body is usually begging for veg 😂

MikeUniformMike · 16/12/2019 18:53

Something green.

itcamefrombeckyvardyself · 16/12/2019 19:02

Dauphinois potatoes

Green beans

Honey glazed carrots

viques · 16/12/2019 19:14

Personally I would do the ham but with proper oven baked potatoes not roasties, and red cabbage. OK bung on the pigs in blankets as well. I would make a crunchy salad like a Waldorf and if another vegetable is needed I would either do broccoli spears or a recipe for leeks in an orange sauce(easy, it's not really a sauce at all) it's a Sophie Grigson one and probably on line somewhere. If not I can post it. I would lose the lobster Macaroni and cheese but only because we have that for Christmas Eve supper.........

Eminybob · 16/12/2019 19:17

Sprouts!

MrsGrindah · 16/12/2019 20:52

Nobody is that keen on greens unfortunately! Except me! I’m doing the Mac and cheese fir extra card because two people have huuuuge appetites! But keep the ideas coming..sorry I meant to say I’m doing a salad too.

Ooh just had a thought...cheesy leeks!

Carbs not card

Cook pasta - add cucumber water chestnuts and pepper - stir all together with mayonnaise

lifeisgoodagain · 16/12/2019 20:56

Salad! Don't bother with the mac and cheese and roasties too much stodge. Keep it simple in my opinion - ham, potato salad, green salad, red cabbage coleslaw and bread

MrsGrindah · 16/12/2019 21:00

My people need stodge unfortunately! Big blokes who do loads of exercise!

The lobster macaroni cheese doesn't really go with the rest of it.
I would look at that spread and thing ' But there's no veg!'

I have a good appetite but that looks like a beige buffet.

Roast potatoes sound nice. The cheesy leeks sound good.

MrsGrindah · 16/12/2019 21:11

They don’t like veg though. It’s a help yourself thing rather than a complete meal if you see what I mean....a sat down buffet I suppose!

I missed out in my opening post then I will be doing a salad but that’s more fir me to be honest....everyone else will avoid veg if possible

Leek gratin would be delicious with that.

LiquoricePickle · 17/12/2019 02:45

I think leeks would work. Would they eat greens in the form of a green bean casserole?

justilou1 · 17/12/2019 02:48

Buttered (garlic optional) green beens and toasted almonds. Easy and yum.
