Raisin flavoured cordial. As children we were given it neat in tiny glasses, Christmas and to greet the new year. We called it raisin wine.

JayeAshe · 12/12/2019 12:38

Ooh I wonder if anyone at all remembers Lucky Numbers sweets and chocolates selection in a carton the same shape as Roses used to be .... 《goes off to Google》

Caramel78 · 12/12/2019 12:39

Mint Mingle chocolates.
Sara Lee chocolate gateaux.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 12/12/2019 12:39

Tunis cake - still see it very occasionally but nobody seems to know what I am on about it when I mention it.

It's like a madeira sponge covered in a very thick layer of chocolate.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 12/12/2019 12:42

mandarin flan which we used to make with tinned mandarins and orange quickgel

Villagegreenpreservation · 12/12/2019 12:44

Neapolitans chocolates were a huge treat.
And drinks wise - Advocaat

Spartonian · 12/12/2019 12:51

Mint filled Ferrero Rocher chocolates

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 12/12/2019 12:52

Birds instant whip!

GingleJangleScarecrow · 12/12/2019 13:29

@villagegreenpreservation If you are anywhere near a Polish Deli you can often find Advocaat filled chocolates.

Spartonian · 12/12/2019 13:30

Just found the advert for the mint ones

WeirdPookah · 12/12/2019 16:43

I loved the Mint Ferrero... That little sugar ball!
Romantica ice cream gateau and Walls 5 flavours tubs.

Thehollyandtheirony · 12/12/2019 16:47

A bowl of Bombay mix was present at all times during my childhood Christmasses.
We used to make peppermint creams. They were basically pure sugar and very easy to make but we felt so sophisticated.

mrspotatohed · 12/12/2019 16:47

Chips behaving badly! They were a frozen 'meal' basically micro chips with a section of either curry or gravy. You could get them from Iceland. I still pine for them now

CoolShoeshine · 12/12/2019 16:53

@GingleJangleScarecrow I have the fondest memories of Tunis Cake at Christmas! I’m from a big family of dried fruit haters so this was our alternative Christmas cake! They sell versions in M&S, Tesco, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s, I’ve read that Sainsbury’s is the best but I haven’t tried it. Also Mary Berry has a recipe for one. They’re not the same though as the McVities - no thick proper chocolate or gawdy but delicious icing! A retro classic that’s surely due a comeback Cake

GingleJangleScarecrow · 12/12/2019 17:43

@coolshoeshine I think you are the only other person who has ever heard of this. Maybe we can start a "Bring back Tunis" revolution Xmas Grin

I was (am) definitely a marzipan hater so maybe this is why we had it?

I no longer live in the UK but will look up the Mary Berry recipe. I think I may have spotted it in the local Lidl once, but the fact that I didn't buy all/any of them suggests that may just have been a dream.

HoHoHolly · 12/12/2019 17:56

Chestnuts roasted, and bread toasted, in our open fire.

Bowls of nuts to crack, and a nutcracker. Never being able to manage the brazils without help.

The once-a-year treat of a block of real butter. That now seems such a bizarre thing to put on such a pedestal. It's £1.50 now after all the price rises.

iklboodolphrednosedreindeer · 12/12/2019 17:56

YY to Neopolitan chocolates. And Spartan chocolates too.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 12/12/2019 19:39

Meltis Berry Fruits. I think they are vile, but my Mum loved them.

CoolShoeshine · 12/12/2019 21:40

@GingleJangleScarecrow if you search on Facebook there’s a group on there who want to bring back the Tunis cake!

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 12/12/2019 21:45

'Weekend' chocolates.

Duck - have it quite often now, but once in a blue moon when I was a child.

Viennetta was for Christmas only, too.

Loveislandaddict · 12/12/2019 21:46

Rise ‘n Shine - powdered fruit juice (made by Kellogg’s ?). I never liked fizzy drinks as a child and had this as a party drink. Growing up, you only had fizzy drinks (and then usually lemonade, not cola) at parties and Christmas.

Loveislandaddict · 12/12/2019 21:47

Vienetta was such a posh dessert.

willdoitinaminute · 12/12/2019 21:50

Hunter & Palmer honey creams. A bit like jammy dodgers but oval in shape and filled with honey rather than jam. We only ever had biscuits at Christmas and when we had visitors, I was brought up in the 60/70s when the cost of living was astronomical ( under Labour government ... hehehe).

missyB1 · 12/12/2019 21:57

My mum’s Irish potato cakes.
A chocolate bar called Triffic (1970s)
School pudding - chocolate shortcake and peppermint custard.
Biscuits Granny sent over from Ireland called Kimberleys, Mikados and Coconut Creams.

ChateauMyself · 12/12/2019 22:01

Another one who had Tunis cake.
